Gold Plus number on file? Hertz at PUJ still feels different.

The Hertz desk sits in the main rental hall at Punta Cana International Airport, serving both Terminal A and Terminal B arrivals on the same schedule as incoming flights. Desk hours track flight operations, so late-night international arrivals around 23:00 usually still find staff on duty. Expect a short indoor walk from baggage claim to the counter, then another 3–7 minute walk outside to the parking lot where the cars are kept.

Rates swing a lot by season, but the real cost swing comes from insurance. In the Dominican Republic, Hertz typically requires local liability coverage on top of any CDW you think your credit card provides. One TripAdvisor reviewer reported spending 30 minutes just discussing insurance options at pickup. Before you land at PUJ, email Hertz DR and get in writing which coverages are mandatory vs optional for your dates.

Gold Plus Rewards members should reset expectations: reviews note that line-skipping often doesn’t work the way it does in the U.S. or Europe. A Google review from 2023 mentioned that the reserved car was ready, but the agent still walked through every coverage line item one by one. If three widebodies from North America touch down between 13:00 and 14:00, plan for a 30–60 minute wait even with a status number on file.

Car condition gets mixed feedback. One renter described their vehicle as “a bit worn but mechanically fine,” and that matches a lot of reports about high mileage compacts and smaller SUVs. You might book a mid-size and get something closer to a subcompact, especially in peak months like January and March. Do a full walk-around, photograph every scratch and dent, and check that the spare tire and jack are actually in the trunk.

Returns happen in the same parking area outside the terminals, usually with a live inspection that can take 10–15 minutes. Several reviewers mention very detailed checks for sand, salt stains, and small windshield chips. Extra cleaning fees show up most often after beach-heavy stays in Bávaro and Uvero Alto, about 20–40 minutes from PUJ. Shake out mats, wipe down seats, and clear the trunk before you roll back to the airport.

Driving from PUJ toward Santo Domingo puts you on toll roads where each booth might cost between 60 and 250 DOP. Some renters report getting a toll device from Hertz, others pay cash at every booth, so ask directly at pickup if a tag is installed in your car. Also pin gas stations near Verón and along the Coral Highway; you don’t want to be searching for fuel with 30 minutes left before a 17:00 return time.

Practical tip: leave your resort 45–60 minutes earlier than Google Maps suggests, so you have room for traffic, refueling, and a slow inspection before a tight evening flight out of Terminal A or B.
