Skip the ATM fees and hit Travelex instead
Right in the Main Terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport, Travelex handles currency exchange before you ride the train to the concourses. It’s post-check-in but pre-security, so you can sort cash for Europe or Asia while you’re still with the landside crowd. Good backup if your bank card hates foreign ATMs.
Rates here generally run a bit worse than what you’d get pulling cash from an overseas ATM, but you’re paying for predictability and walking away with euros, pounds, or Canadian dollars in hand. Travelex usually stocks the big 5–10 currencies; anything more obscure may need advance order through their system, so don’t bank on same-day Thai baht or South African rand.
Service windows follow Main Terminal retail hours, typically early morning through the last evening bank of departures, but they don’t always match the 24/7 flight schedule. If you land on a midnight arrival at PIT, assume Travelex is shut and plan to use an ATM or wait until morning. Always check same-day airport listings if you’re cutting it close to closing time.
Expect minimum transaction amounts and fees that change by currency and ticket size; small $20–$40 swaps rarely make sense once you see the spread. It’s better for a few hundred dollars’ worth of pre-trip cash, especially if you’re heading somewhere like Germany or Japan and want €100–€200 or ¥10,000–¥20,000 to cover taxis and food on day one.
Tip: Use Travelex in the PIT Main Terminal for a starter stash, then rely on bank ATMs overseas for the rest of your trip cash.
