PHX Sky Train

Automated people mover

Automated people mover 3-5 min between terminals; about 5 min between terminals and Rental Car Center $0

Three minutes beats the Terminal 3–4 corridor every time

PHX Sky Train is the free, automated people mover linking Terminals 3 and 4, the Rental Car Center, and the 44th St/Washington Valley Metro Rail station. Trains run 24/7, cost $0, and show up about every 3–5 minutes, so it feels more like a metro line than an airport shuttle. Figure 3–5 minutes between terminals and about 5 minutes between any terminal and the Rental Car Center once you’re on board.

Between Terminal 3 and Terminal 4, Sky Train usually beats walking that long interior corridor, especially in summer. The ride is air‑conditioned, flat, and predictable. If you land at Terminal 3 on American or Delta and connect out of Terminal 4 on Southwest or American, just follow overhead signs for “PHX Sky Train” up one level, ride 3 minutes, then drop back down to your new security checkpoint.

For rental cars, the train stops directly at the PHX Rental Car Center, which replaced the old street shuttles. From Terminal 3 or 4 to the Rental Car Center is about 5 minutes on the train, with headways around 3–5 minutes even early in the morning. Regular renters like to drop bags and companions at Terminal 3 or 4 departures first, return the car alone, then ride Sky Train back without dragging luggage through the garage.

Coming from downtown Phoenix or Tempe on Valley Metro Rail, get off at 44th St/Washington station and follow signs to PHX Sky Train. You stay off the street: there’s an elevated walkway straight from the rail platform to the Sky Train station with escalators and elevators. That short transfer avoids any airport road traffic and drops you at Terminal 3 or 4 in under 10 minutes from the rail platform.

Step-by-step from 44th St/Washington: 1) Exit the Valley Metro Rail train at 44th St/Washington. 2) Follow “PHX Sky Train” signs to the elevated walkway. 3) Take the escalator or elevator up to the Sky Train station. 4) Tap nothing—there’s no fare. 5) Board the next train; they come every 3–5 minutes. 6) Ride to “Terminal 3” or “Terminal 4” depending on your airline. 7) Exit and follow signs down to ticketing, security, or baggage claim.

Watch out for signage quirks, especially at Terminal 3 baggage claim. Some people accidentally follow curbside shuttle and rideshare signs and miss the Sky Train entrance entirely. If you’re on the baggage level, look up for overhead “PHX Sky Train” signs and be ready to go up one level to reach the platform. One last tip: during the early‑morning rental car return rush, trains can go standing‑room only for a few minutes, so keep your bags tight and board any car in the train, not just the first one.
