Weld Quay and Balik Pulau workers use Bus 306 straight from PEN
Rapid Penang Bus 306 runs between Weld Quay, Penang International Airport (PEN T1), and Hospital Balik Pulau, so it’s geared more to commuters than tourists headed for George Town hotels. The route list literally shows “Weld Quay – Penang International Airport – Hospital Balik Pulau,” which tells you it’s aimed at people heading to industrial zones and residential suburbs. If you work near Balik Pulau or along the southwest corridor, this is the airport bus that actually lines up with your daily routes.
All Rapid Penang airport buses, including 306, stop at the public bus bays outside T1’s arrivals area on the ground floor. Look for the blue Rapid Penang branding and the electronic sign with “306” on the front of the bus. The same stop also serves 401E, but 306 branches differently after the airport, so double-check the route code before you tap in. You pay the normal Rapid Penang city fare on board, using cash or the usual Malaysian transit cards.
Route-wise, 306 gives you an extra way to reach Weld Quay compared with 401E, with different neighborhoods covered in between the airport and the ferry/bus hub. The official description highlights the Weld Quay–Airport–Hospital Balik Pulau linkage, which is useful if you live or work near Hospital Balik Pulau and want a direct public bus to PEN. For visitors on longer stays, 306 can also act as a low-cost connection from the terminal into more local residential streets instead of going straight to tourist areas.
You won’t find exact journey times listed for 306, and traffic around Bayan Lepas and into Balik Pulau changes a lot between rush hour and late evening. As a rough rule, build at least 60 minutes from the airport to Weld Quay and longer if you’re riding all the way to Hospital Balik Pulau. For early shifts, add extra buffer because Rapid Penang buses sometimes bunch or run slightly off the printed headways, especially in heavy rain.
One last tip: at the airport bus bay, check both the side sticker and the front LED sign for “306” and “Hospital Balik Pulau” or “Weld Quay” before boarding, since 401E also shows “Airport–Weld Quay” and it’s easy to hop on the wrong route when both buses pull in close together.
