Taxi 30-40 min MYR 50-70

MYR 50–70 gets you door-to-door when your phone is dead

Taxis at Penang International Airport (PEN T1) are the backup plan when Grab won’t load, your SIM fails, or you just want a straight line ride with two suitcases and a stroller. Figure on MYR 50–70 from the airport to George Town for a 30–40 minute run, compared with reports of MYR 2 on the bus and MYR 40+ on app rides in light traffic.

There’s no meter involved at PEN: several TripAdvisor reports describe fixed coupon or pre-agreed fares, with one traveller calling them “old Proton sedans with no meter in sight, just a piece of paper with a fixed price that’s at least double Grab.” That fits FlyerTalk comments quoting “MYR 40+” as a baseline into town, often out of a small booth right in the T1 arrivals area.

Operational hours basically match flight arrivals: you’ll find drivers hanging around the T1 arrivals curb from early morning flights through late-night landings after 23:00. Cars are often older sedans rather than MPVs; one Penang local on FlyerTalk flatly calls them “beat up old cars and expensive,” so don’t expect a near-new Toyota on a MYR 50 fare.

Bring cash ringgit. Multiple TripAdvisor users say PEN taxis typically do not take cards at all, so have at least MYR 100 on hand if you’re paying MYR 50–70 to George Town or MYR 80+ to Batu Ferringhi. ATMs sit in T1 arrivals, but queues can stack up when two A320s land at the same time.

How to use taxis from Penang International (T1)

  • 1. Exit arrivals at T1 and look for the taxi counter. It’s in the public arrivals hall just after baggage reclaim, before you step out to the curb.
  • 2. Ask the counter staff for the fixed fare to your area. Quote a landmark like “George Town Komtar” or “Batu Ferringhi” and expect something in the MYR 50–70+ range.
  • 3. Confirm how you’re paying. Assume cash only; if they say card, ask again before they write the coupon, as reviews say most cars still run cash-first.
  • 4. Take the coupon outside to the taxi line. Hand it to the marshal or driver at the curb directly outside T1 arrivals, then match the plate number if one is written on the slip.
  • 5. Reconfirm the fare in the car before moving. Say the amount out loud, in ringgit, and confirm there’s no extra per-bag fee for your luggage or stroller.

Regulars check Grab first in the arrivals hall: if the app shows something like MYR 20–30 into George Town, they skip the taxi; if surge pushes Grab into the MYR 60+ range or their data dies, they walk to the counter instead. Quick tip: screenshot a map with your hotel pin on airport Wi‑Fi before you leave T1 so you can show the driver even if your mobile data never connects.

Step by step
