10-minute walk from most gates gets you to PDL’s main Duty Free
This is the standard post-security Duty Free at João Paulo II Airport, right after the checkpoint and before the main gates. It opens for the first departures in the early morning and usually stays open through the last evening flights. You’ll see the usual mix: liquor, wine, perfume, cosmetics, and some chocolates, all in a single open-plan space on the way to boarding.
Alcohol prices can be decent compared to mainland Portugal, especially on spirits in 1L duty free bottles, but local Azorean wine and liqueurs are the real browse section here. Expect common European brands plus some regional labels you won’t easily find outside São Miguel. Tobacco products sit in a separate section with clear duty free limits shown at the shelves.
Chocolate and gift food take up one corner, with recognizable brands alongside a small selection of Azorean sweets and preserves. Cosmetics and perfume lines lean heavily on big European names, often with bundle or twin-pack promos near the front. Snacks and soft drinks are available, but prices are higher than the café in the public area, so treat this more as last-minute extras than full-blown provisioning.
Stock can thin out later in the day on busy summer flights, especially on popular spirits and some local items, so don’t leave specialty buys until final call. One practical tip: if you care about comparing prices, snap a quick photo of shelf tags in town first, then decide here if the “duty free” label actually saves you money.
