Gate-side in Main Terminal, James River Grill is your sit-down option
James River Grill sits past security in Norfolk’s Main Terminal, just beyond the central checkpoint, and functions as the primary full-service restaurant airside. It’s the spot you see with the larger bar area and table seating facing the concourse, usually busy around the 6:00–8:00 a.m. and 4:00–6:00 p.m. bank of departures. Service pace tracks with those rushes, so build in at least 45 minutes if you want a proper meal before boarding.
Menu pricing hits typical airport numbers: breakfast plates around $12–$16, burgers and sandwiches in the $15–$19 range, and draft beers usually landing between $8 and $11. The food skews American grill: think eggs, bacon, and pancakes in the morning, then burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and a few seafood nods tied to the James River name later in the day. Portions run on the larger side, so one entrée can often cover an average-length layover.
The bar runs most of the day, generally opening by the first wave of flights around 5:00 a.m. and staying open into the late evening bank until roughly the last departures. You’ll see the usual domestic macros on tap, plus a couple of Virginia brews rotated through, often including something from breweries in Norfolk or nearby Hampton Roads. Mixed drinks sit in the $11–$14 band, with basic well pours on the lower end and airport-priced call liquor at the top.
Seating splits between high-tops near the bar and regular tables along the concourse windows, all within sight of several Main Terminal gates. There’s no dedicated power at every seat, but you can usually spot a wall outlet along the perimeter if you look near the floor by the window line. No mobile ordering or QR code pay in most reports, so plan on a standard server check drop that can add 5–10 minutes at the end.
Tip: If your boarding pass shows a Main Terminal gate under 10, James River Grill is close enough that you can stay at your table until the app calls group boarding, then walk over in about three minutes.
