Rental Car Shuttle

On-airport bus

On-airport bus Roughly 10–15 min terminal–MMF via ATS plus rental counter time Included in rental; ATS segment is free

Figure on 10–15 minutes from Terminals 1–3 to the MMF

The Rental Car Shuttle at ORD now means the Airport Transit System (ATS) plus a short walk inside the Multi-Modal Facility (MMF), instead of a dozen branded buses. The ATS runs every 3–5 minutes, 24/7, from Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5 to the MMF, and the ride itself takes about 10 minutes. The ATS is free, and the shuttle portion is built into your rental rate, so there’s no extra fare to budget for.

How it actually works, step by step

  • 1. After landing at Terminal 1, 2, 3, or 5, follow ATS signs toward the train station in your terminal; walk time is usually 5–10 minutes from most gates.
  • 2. Board the ATS; trains come roughly every 3–5 minutes and run 24 hours a day between the terminals, the parking garages, and the MMF.
  • 3. Ride the ATS to the Multi-Modal Facility station (MMF); expect about 10 minutes in motion with a couple of intermediate stops.
  • 4. At the MMF, follow overhead signs for your brand (Hertz, Avis, National, Alamo, Enterprise, Budget, etc.) inside the building; counters and car pick-up areas are on clearly marked levels.
  • 5. If you have a program like National Emerald Club or Hertz Gold, skip the counter and walk straight to your assigned aisle, which can shave 20–30 minutes off busy periods.
  • 6. For return, follow airport signs for “Rental Car Return / Multi-Modal Facility,” drop the car at your company’s lane, then walk back inside to the ATS for the 10-minute ride to your departure terminal.

Crowds, timing, and the off-airport shuttles

All the majors share the MMF, which is efficient on paper but means big crowds in real life at 7–9 a.m. Mondays and 4–7 p.m. Sundays; lines at some counters can add 20–40 minutes. A few value brands and some parking outfits still run their own shuttles from the terminal curb every 10–20 minutes, so you may need to wait outside at a specific door instead of using the ATS if your confirmation email mentions “off-airport.”

What regulars do and one last tip

Frequent renters who land at ORD two or three times a month usually pad schedules by 30–45 minutes between touchdown and actually pulling out of the MMF. Many refill gas and return cars 30–60 minutes earlier than they technically need to, then clear TSA at Terminals 1, 2, 3, or 5 and work from the gate area to avoid MMF traffic near holidays. One practical tip: before you fly, screenshot your rental company’s MMF instructions and loyalty number; pulling that up in the ATS car can save you a confused lap around the building and keep the total terminal-to-car time closer to that 20-minute target.
