Billy Goat Tavern

1 · C18 $$$$

Burger counter at C18 that feels straight out of Chicago

At Billy Goat Tavern in Terminal 1, by gate C18, you get the airport version of the old-school Chicago burger grill: flat-top burgers, fries, and basic breakfast plates instead of another generic bar-and-grill. It sits on the C concourse used mostly by United, so it’s the easiest “real Chicago” option if you’re stuck on a regional jet at C20–C30.

Prices run high for what is essentially diner food: think around $12–$15 for a burger, $4–$6 for fries, and airport-priced beers. Still, if you compare it to other $$$$ spots in T1, this is one of the few that actually feels like the city outside. Everything is post-security, so you only use this if you’re already through TSA in Terminal 1.

The move here is simple: get a cheeseburger off the grill, skip anything that sounds fancy, and add fries if you’re hungry enough to justify another $5 on top. The menu covers basics—burgers, breakfast sandwiches, maybe a salad or two—but this is a grease-and-carb stop first, last, and always. If you need something quick before a United mainline out of C18, they can usually turn a burger in under 10 minutes off-peak.

Regulars on C concourse runs treat Billy Goat as the default when stuck with a 45–90 minute layover and don’t want to trek back toward the B gates. If your connection has you landing at C10 and departing from C19, this saves you a lot of steps versus walking to the food court by B8. It’s not a long sit-down meal; it’s grab a barstool, eat, and be at your gate in under 5 minutes.

Tip: if your flight is out of B gates, only walk to Billy Goat at C18 if you’ve got at least 40 minutes free; the tunnel between B and C adds real time to the round-trip.
