Gate-side reading in Terminal 1: SF Chronicle News

This small SF Chronicle News sits in Terminal 1 at OAK, handy if you’re flying Southwest or Spirit and want something for the plane. It runs typical newsstand hours that roughly match the first and last departures, so early-morning flights around 5–6 a.m. are usually covered. Expect the standard airport markup on drinks and snacks, but magazines and papers are close to street price.

Inside Terminal 1 post-security, SF Chronicle News carries print copies of the San Francisco Chronicle alongside national titles like USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. You’ll also see a rack of travel-sized toiletries and basic chargers, so it’s a backup if you forgot a USB-C cable or toothpaste before TSA. Packaged snacks and bottled drinks are grab-and-go, useful if your gate café line runs 15+ minutes.

Selection leans heavily on magazines and paperbacks, with a decent mix of crime, thrillers, and bestsellers that rotate every few weeks. Kids’ activity books and small toys sit near the register, which helps on 2–3 hour flights up and down the West Coast. Prices on candy and nuts track with other Terminal 1 shops, usually a dollar or two higher than downtown Oakland.

Lines move quickly; you’re rarely waiting more than 3–4 minutes unless a full 737 just emptied into the concourse. Figure 5–10 minutes total to walk from most Terminal 1 gates, buy something, and get back before boarding. If your flight’s already in the “group 3–4 lining up” phase, skip a full meal line and just grab a drink and snack here instead.
