Keisei train

41 minutes from Narita to Nippori: that’s the Skyliner pitch

The Keisei Skyliner runs a fixed 41–47 minute ride between Narita Airport and Nippori Station, then a couple more minutes to Ueno, beating the standard JR lines on speed. Trains stop at Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station and Narita Airport Terminal 2·3 Station, so you’re covered from T1, T2, or T3 with one short walk from arrivals.

First departure leaves Narita around 7:30, last one close to 23:00, with trains usually every 20 minutes during the day. The line is fully post-immigration but before you hit the station gates you’ll see ticket counters and machines right by the Keisei entrances on B1F in both T1 and T2·3. Follow signs for “Keisei Line / Skyliner” with the blue logo, not JR, if you want the fast option to Ueno.

A one-way Skyliner ticket to Nippori or Keisei Ueno runs roughly ¥2,570, higher than the regular Keisei Limited Express at around ¥1,070, but you’re paying for reserved seating and speed. All seats are reserved; you get a specific car and seat number printed on your ticket, so don’t just sit anywhere. Kids 6–11 pay about half fare; under-6 rides free if they don’t take their own reserved seat.

You can buy tickets at staffed Keisei counters, at orange and blue ticket machines near the station gates, or as a package with a prepaid IC card like Suica or PASMO, often discounted a few hundred yen. If you already hold a QR code booking from an online purchase, use the dedicated machines at the Narita Keisei area to print the physical ticket before heading to the platform. Keep the ticket handy; you need it both at the platform gate and again at the exit in Nippori or Keisei Ueno.

Onboard, cars run 2–2 seating with decent legroom and luggage racks at the ends of each car, plus overhead racks for smaller bags; each car has at least one power outlet row and free Wi‑Fi under the “Skyliner” SSID. Restrooms sit in specific cars (check the overhead car map once you board) and vending machines are not on the train, so grab drinks from the platform kiosks before departure. Trains hit around 160 km/h between Narita and Nippori, so stack heavier suitcases on the lower rack rail to keep them from shifting.

At Nippori, the Skyliner arrives on dedicated Keisei platforms 1–2, with a signed transfer route straight to JR Yamanote Line platforms 10–11 that takes about 3–5 minutes on foot. At Keisei Ueno, the station sits a short 5–7 minute walk north of JR Ueno Station, mostly underground with escalators; plan that extra time if you’re catching the Shinkansen from JR Ueno. One last tip: buy your return Skyliner ticket from Ueno or Nippori as soon as you know your flight time, then aim for a train that gets you back to Narita at least 2 hours before departure.
