Regional train

Regional trains from MUC run straight toward Regensburg and Landshut

The ÜFEX Airport Express is a regional train line that runs from Munich Airport (terminals 1 and 2) toward eastern Bavaria, including Regensburg and Landshut, so you skip a extra change at Munich Hauptbahnhof. Trains start from the underground airport station (Flughafen München) below the central area between T1 and T2, and standard regional tickets and Bayern-Tickets are valid on ÜFEX services.

Typical ÜFEX departures run roughly every hour during the day, with a ride to Landshut in about 35–40 minutes and to Regensburg in around 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on the exact train. You’re boarding regular DB regional stock, so expect standard second class plus an optional first class section if you pay the supplement, not an airport-branded express product.

Tickets for ÜFEX can be bought in the terminal from DB ticket machines near the station escalators, or in the DB Reisezentrum when open. A Bayern-Ticket covers ÜFEX plus onward local transport across Bavaria for a fixed day rate (for example, a solo Bayern-Ticket starts around the low €30s, valid after 09:00 on weekdays and all day weekends). Regular point-to-point tickets are usually a bit cheaper for very short rides like only to Freising.

To reach ÜFEX from arrivals at Terminal 2, follow the train icons down two levels to the station and allow about 10–15 minutes from baggage claim to the platform if you walk straight. From Terminal 1, walking time to the same station is roughly similar, as both terminals feed into the central plaza above the platforms. Signs list ÜFEX by train number and destination city instead of just "Airport Express".

Here’s the basic step-by-step for using the ÜFEX after landing at MUC:

  • 1. Clear passport control and customs in Terminal 1 or 2, then head toward the central area marked "Zentralbereich".
  • 2. Follow the DB/S-Bahn train symbols down to the underground station marked "Flughafen München", about a 5–10 minute walk with escalators.
  • 3. Use a red DB ticket machine or DB app to buy a Bayern-Ticket or point-to-point ticket to Landshut, Regensburg, or your specific stop.
  • 4. Check the departure board for an ÜFEX or RE service toward Regensburg/ Landshut and note the exact platform number, usually one of the two airport tracks.
  • 5. Board in the correct class (first or second), stash luggage in the racks near the doors, and keep your ticket ready for inspection during the ride.

One simple tip: if you’re targeting a Bayern-Ticket, time your landing or station arrival so you board after 09:00 on weekdays; that alone can undercut separate tickets for two or more riders heading past Landshut.
