€13.70 S-Bahn ticket covers S1 from MUC into Munich
S1 runs every 20 minutes from Munich Airport to the western and northwestern suburbs, hitting stops like Moosach, Laim, and Pasing after splitting at Neufahrn. Trains start running shortly after 04:00 and go until around 01:00, with a ride from the airport to Laim taking roughly 45–50 minutes. This line is slower into the city center than S8, but makes more sense if you’re headed to districts west of the Innenstadt.
The S-Bahn station sits under the Munich Airport Center between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2; follow green “S” signs from both terminals and expect a 5–10 minute walk from most gates. Ticket machines in the station accept cards and cash, and a single Munich XXL or zone M–5 ticket at €13.70 covers the S1 ride plus local U-Bahn or bus within the validity window. You don’t tap in or out; you validate by time of purchase or by stamping older strip tickets in the blue machines on the platform.
From the airport, most S1 runs go MUC → Neufahrn → Moosach → Laim → Pasing, with some trains continuing toward Ostbahnhof via a branch through the trunk line. Travel time to Moosach sits around 35–40 minutes, while Pasing is closer to 50 minutes from MUC. If your hotel is near Laim or Pasing station, S1 usually beats taking S8 into Hauptbahnhof and then doubling back on another S-Bahn or regional train.
Standard second-class seating on S1 is unreserved, with a mix of 2+2 seats and some folding seats by the doors; luggage racks sit above the seats and at carriage ends, and airport-bound trains usually have more suitcase space in the middle cars. Level boarding at Munich Airport, Moosach, Laim, and Pasing makes life easier with heavy bags or strollers, but watch for slight gaps at some older intermediate platforms. Expect light crowding during weekday rush hours between around 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30.
For late arrivals after 23:00, S1 frequency can drop to two trains per hour, so check the live board in the station or the MVV/MVG apps before heading down. If you miss an S1 by a minute or two, S8 often shows up first and can still work: ride S8 to Hauptbahnhof (about 40 minutes) and swap to S3, S4, or regional trains for Laim or Pasing. As a rule, if you’re staying west of Laim, default to S1; if your bed is near Marienplatz or Ostbahnhof, take S8 instead.
Tip: Buy the Airport-City-Day-Ticket (now zone-based, usually M–5) at about €18 if you plan multiple U-Bahn or tram rides the same day; it pays off as soon as you add two short city trips to your S1 ride.
