If you want a driver waiting in the public arrivals area of Terminal A at Maputo Airport, hotel shuttle services are the default corporate option. Most mid-range and upscale properties in central Maputo will arrange a private car on request, usually quoted as an airport transfer rather than a free shuttle. Drivers stand just beyond customs with printed name boards, which helps if you land after dark or feel uneasy haggling at the taxi rank.

Several travellers in the Friends of Mozambique Facebook group report being quoted transfer prices that are two to three times the 10–15 USD taxi fare into downtown. Hotels frame this as a premium, point‑to‑point service from MPM to your front door, but comfort levels are broadly similar to regular taxis: four-door sedans or SUVs with basic air‑conditioning. For a solo traveller on a budget, that markup adds up quickly over a short 6–8 km ride into the city.

Most hotels near Avenida Julius Nyerere or the Baixa area ask you to email flight details at least 24 hours before arrival, and they then bundle the shuttle into your room folio or charge it separately in meticais at check‑out. Don’t assume there is a complimentary shuttle; comments in the Friends of Mozambique group stress that many Maputo hotels treat airport transfers as a revenue line, not a free perk. Always get a specific quote in MZN or USD before you confirm anything.

Regular visitors posting in that same Facebook group say they first ask their hotel for its standard airport transfer price, then compare it with the 600–900 MZN (about 10–15 USD) they usually pay from the official taxi rank outside Terminal A’s exit. If the difference is small and they’re landing on a late SA, LAM, or TAP Portugal arrival after 21:00, they tend to accept the hotel car; if the hotel wants double or triple the taxi rate, they just walk out to the rank.

Watch out for hotels quietly switching vehicles or sub‑contracting the ride to third‑party drivers without telling you; one TripAdvisor thread mentions guests expecting a branded hotel van and instead getting an unmarked car, with the same high transfer fee. If the hotel quotes 25–30 USD each way, ask directly what car you’ll get, exactly where the driver will stand in arrivals, and whether the fare is per car or per person before you land.

Practical tip: the day before you fly to MPM, email your hotel for their airport transfer price in writing, then screenshot that quote and keep it handy so you can compare it with the taxi rank offers once you exit Terminal A.
