Bus

10–15 minutes from Main Terminal doors to rental car keys

The Rental Car Shuttle at MKE runs between the Main Terminal baggage claim and the off-site consolidated rental car facility about 1 mile away. Buses pull up at marked rental car stops outside baggage claim on the lower level, and the ride itself usually takes around 5 minutes once you’re on board.

Shuttles operate daily from early morning into late evening, roughly matching the flight schedule from the first departures around 5:00 a.m. to the last arrivals after 11:00 p.m. If you land on one of the final flights of the night, expect a slightly longer wait between buses, sometimes up to 15–20 minutes.

The bus is free, runs in a constant loop, and drops you directly in front of the rental car facility used by major brands like Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Alamo, and National. From drop-off to the counters is less than a 2-minute walk under cover, with elevators available if you have strollers or checked bags.

To catch the shuttle from arrivals, follow the “Rental Cars” signs from baggage claim 1–6 on the lower level of the Main Terminal, then step outside to the curb labeled for rental car buses. For returns, follow airport signs to the rental car facility access road, drop your vehicle, and walk 100–200 feet to the shuttle pickup zone back to the terminal.

If you’re traveling with family or a lot of luggage, one approach is to have the driver head to the rental facility alone while the rest of the group stays near baggage claim 3–4 with the bags; once the driver has the car, they can loop back to the arrivals curb in under 10 minutes. That keeps kids and suitcases off the bus and out of the weather.

Plan your timing so the shuttle leg doesn’t surprise you: add a 15–20 minute buffer on both arrival and departure to cover the ride, the short walk, and basic paperwork at the rental counters during normal afternoon peaks.
