30–40 minutes from MIA to Downtown Miami on the Orange Line
The Metrorail Orange Line runs from Miami International Airport Station to Downtown and Brickell in about 30–40 minutes, with trains usually every 15–30 minutes from early morning to late night. The airport station connects to the terminals via the free MIA Mover, a short 3–4 minute ride from the Central terminal area.
A one-way fare on the Orange Line is about the price of a quick airport coffee, currently around $2.25 using an EASY Card or EASY Ticket. You board at Miami Airport Station, which sits just north of the main terminal complex and also links to Metrobus and Tri-Rail. Compared with a $25–$35 rideshare into Downtown at rush hour, the train cost stays flat.
Service runs roughly 5:00 a.m. to midnight, with first and last train times posted at Miami Airport Station and on the platform screens. The Orange Line runs through key stops like Earlington Heights, Government Center, and Brickell, making it the only rail line that goes straight from MIA into the Downtown core. Trains share some track with the Green Line north of Earlington Heights.
For Brightline or Tri-Rail, plan on one easy transfer using real station names. From MIA, ride the Orange Line to MiamiCentral via Government Center, then walk a few blocks to the Brightline MiamiCentral station. For Tri-Rail, skip the Orange Line and use the free Tri-Rail shuttle from Miami Airport Station directly to the Hialeah Market or Tri-Rail MIA station in about 10 minutes.
Step-by-step from your gate to the Orange Line:
- 1. After landing at MIA, follow signs for “MIA Mover” and “Rental Cars,” which start in the North, Central, and South terminal concourses.
- 2. Ride the MIA Mover (about 3–4 minutes) from the 3rd level of the terminal to the MIC (Miami Intermodal Center), where Miami Airport Station sits.
- 3. At the station, buy an EASY Card or EASY Ticket from the blue ticket machines; a one-way Orange Line ride costs roughly $2.25.
- 4. Tap in at the fare gates marked for Metrorail and follow signs for the Orange Line toward “Downtown/Brickell.”
- 5. Board the next Orange Line train; typical wait is 15–30 minutes, shorter at peak times, and ride 20–30 minutes to Government Center or Brickell.
- 6. Exit at your stop, tap out at the gates, then use street-level signs for taxis, buses, and local rideshares around Government Center or Brickell stations.
One tip: if your flight lands after 11:30 p.m., check the last Orange Line departure time at Miami Airport Station before riding the MIA Mover so you don’t miss the final train into Downtown.
