Green Line trains from Miami Airport mostly serve local workers

The Metrorail Green Line runs from Miami International Airport to Palmetto, with airport access via the Miami Intermodal Center next to the Central and South terminal area. Trains share the same Airport station as the Orange Line, but the Green Line usually matters more for airport staff and locals commuting from Hialeah and the northern stations than for first-time visitors heading to Brickell or Downtown.

You reach the Metrorail Green Line by taking the free MIA Mover train from the airport terminal to the Miami Intermodal Center in about 4 minutes. The station connects to all three terminal areas (North, Central, South) via the MIA Mover walkway, so you never exit into street traffic. Follow signs for “MIA Mover” and then “Metrorail” once you arrive at the Intermodal Center.

A one-way Green Line fare costs $2.25 as of 2024, payable with contactless cards, mobile wallets, or an EASY Card at ticket machines inside the Airport station. Machines sit on the station concourse level before the fare gates, and they accept cards and cash. Buy or tap in before you ride; there is no payment option on the train itself.

Trains on the Green Line typically run every 15–30 minutes during daytime hours, with service starting around 5:00 a.m. and ending close to midnight, though exact times vary by day. Late-night and Sunday schedules can stretch gaps, so check the real-time board in the Airport station or the MDT Transit app before counting on a tight arrival or shift start.

As of now, the Metrorail Green Line does not give you a one-seat ride to Downtown Miami or Miami Beach from the airport; the Orange Line and buses cover those tourist corridors instead. The Green Line mainly helps if you are heading toward stations like Hialeah, Okeechobee, or Palmetto, all north of the main urban core.

Step-by-step from the terminal

  • 1. After baggage claim in North, Central, or South, follow purple “MIA Mover” signs.
  • 2. Ride the MIA Mover about 4 minutes to the Miami Intermodal Center.
  • 3. Walk straight off the MIA Mover and follow “Metrorail” signs up one level to the Airport station.
  • 4. Use the ticket machines to pay the $2.25 fare or tap a contactless card at the fare gate.
  • 5. On the platform, check the overhead screens and board a northbound Green Line train toward Palmetto.
  • 6. Exit at your stop, then follow signs to buses, parking lots, or local streets as needed.

One practical tip: if your destination is downtown or Brickell, skip the Green Line and follow signs for the Orange Line instead; that choice saves a transfer and usually 10–20 minutes of backtracking.
