Main passenger terminal

Main passenger terminal hosts 5 airlines.

Two minutes from check-in to gate in MHH’s only terminal

American Eagle, Bahamasair, Delta Connection, Flamingo Air, and Western Air all share this single main terminal at Leonard M. Thompson International Airport. Check-in desks for all carriers sit in one short row, so you can see every counter from almost anywhere in the hall. There are no separate concourses or terminal codes to worry about; every commercial flight uses this one building.

Walking time from the entrance doors, past check-in, through security, and into the small departure lounge is only a few minutes end to end. That compact setup is why many regulars mention arriving 60–75 minutes before a U.S. flight and still making it comfortably when traffic is light. The flip side: if two or three U.S.-bound departures line up within 30–45 minutes, the check-in and security lines can back up quickly because all passengers feed through the same checkpoints.

Immigration and customs for international flights sit directly beside the baggage claim area, just a short walk from the gates. One reviewer called it a “small airport with immigration and customs” that “serves its purpose,” which tracks with the layout: a couple of carousels, manual passport control, and basic inspection tables. Arrivals and departures share the same general footprint, so following the overhead signs and the crowd from your flight is usually enough to get you to the right place.

Inside the airside waiting room, seating covers only a modest section of the floor, and it fills fast when an American Eagle or Delta Connection departure to the U.S. boards. Flyers who come through often suggest sitting near your posted gate number as soon as it hits the monitor. There are no jet bridges at MHH, so boarding typically means walking a short distance across the apron to the aircraft parked in front of the terminal.

Food and retail options inside this terminal are extremely thin, with multiple review summaries advising passengers to eat in Marsh Harbour town or at the resort before heading to the airport. Some travellers mention that the few concessions can be closed altogether, especially later in the afternoon, and stock can run low on simple items like bottled water. Prices follow typical island-airport logic: expect to pay a few extra dollars for snacks and drinks when something is open.

There are no branded lounges here, no airline clubs, and no paid dayrooms; what you see in the main departure area is all you get. Seating clusters sit close to the gates used by Bahamasair and Western Air for inter-island hops, as well as the stands used by U.S. legacy affiliates. Power outlets can be scarce, so charging your phone at your hotel before heading in is smarter than hunting for a plug in the terminal.

Facilities feel dated compared to larger Bahamian airports like Nassau’s LPIA, and several reviewers say the building “could use some updating” in both finishes and bathrooms. You will not find automated check-in kiosks for every airline, biometric gates, or large digital wayfinding boards; this is mostly a staffed-counter and paper-boarding-pass operation. The upside: fewer systems to break, and staff are often mentioned as friendly even when the place is clearly working with older infrastructure.

Private-jet operators use the same runway and the same small terminal footprint as commercial flights, rather than a completely separate FBO complex. Charter brokers note that crews often bring passengers right up to the edge of this main building, then they walk a few steps to the same arrivals and departures flow as everyone else. If you are switching from a charter to a scheduled flight on the same day, that shared setup can cut down on transfer time because there is no extra terminal hop involved.

One practical tip: bring your own snacks and a full water bottle (emptied before security, refilled after) and aim to arrive about 90 minutes before a U.S.-bound departure and 60 minutes for domestic or regional hops, then head straight to your gate once it posts to lock down a seat in the small waiting area.
