Most NGO and media staff leave MGQ in pre-booked taxis
At Aden Adde International (terminals T1A, T2, T3), taxis work best when pre-arranged through a trusted driver, hotel, or security team. Expect your driver to meet you at the terminal exit or at a set point by the public parking area, usually within 5–10 minutes of landing once you clear formalities. Cash rules here; bring small USD bills ($5, $10, $20) or Somali shillings, because card payment isn’t realistic.
Airport to central Mogadishu runs roughly 5–12 km depending on your hotel, and most pre-arranged taxi transfers sit in the $15–$30 range one-way. Many international hotels and NGOs build the cost into a security or transport fee, so ask before you pay twice. Rides typically take 15–40 minutes depending on checkpoints and traffic on key roads like Airport Road.
For arrivals, drivers usually wait outside T2 and T3 with a paper sign showing your name or your organization’s acronym. Give them your flight number (for example, Turkish Airlines TK686 or Ethiopian ET376) so they can track delays. Standard practice is a flat rate agreed by WhatsApp or email at least 24 hours before landing; confirm the amount clearly in writing, including any waiting-time fee over 60 minutes.
On departures, most hotels schedule taxi pickups 2–3 hours before your international flight’s departure time. For a 10:00 flight, that means leaving your hotel around 07:00 to account for city traffic and extra security screening before you reach the main terminal doors. Drivers usually drop you at the outer security perimeter first, then you pass through at least two checks before reaching T2 or T3 check-in counters.
Street-hailed cabs outside the airport gates can be cheaper by $5–$10, but most foreign visitors stick to known drivers or hotel cars because of security protocols. If you must change vehicles or drivers, do it at a controlled spot, such as the parking area in front of T2, and share the new driver’s phone number with your local contact.
Practical tip: Before you fly, save your driver’s name, car color, and plate number in your phone, then verify all three at the curb at MGQ before getting in.
