Five-minute walk from baggage claim to the Uber pickup zone
Memphis International (MEM) runs all baggage claim for gates A, B, and C on the same lower level, and the Uber pickup zone sits just outside door 1 on the commercial drive. Once you grab your bag from carousel 3 or 4, follow signs for “Rideshare” and walk about 5 minutes to the designated curb. Uber is available 24/7 at MEM, with the lightest demand usually after 22:00 and the heaviest around the 05:00–07:00 bank of early departures.
A typical ride from MEM to downtown Memphis (Beale Street / FedExForum area, roughly 10 miles) runs about 15–20 minutes in light traffic via I‑240 and I‑69. Fares swing a lot: off-peak UberX can sit in the $18–$25 range, while surge during a FedExForum event or a Liberty Bowl weekend can push that closer to $35–$40. A run out to East Memphis or the Poplar Corridor (about 13–15 miles) usually lands in the $22–$30 window when prices are calm.
Once you collect your bag at MEM, do not call the car until you are heading toward the door by baggage carousel 1; drivers often reach the curb in 3–7 minutes, and the airport police start nudging them along if they sit longer than about 5. In the Uber app, set the pickup pin on the lower-level commercial drive, not on the upper departures level, or your driver may circle once around the loop (another 5–7 minutes) before finding you.
UberXL and Comfort show up at MEM, but not at the density you see at hubs like ATL or DFW; during late-night arrivals after 23:00, you may wait 10–15 minutes for a larger vehicle, and a Comfort premium can easily add $10–$15 to a downtown run. If you land with checked bags from a full 737 into B concourse, assume 20–25 minutes from touchdown to curb: taxi-in, deplaning 140 people, restroom stop, and the baggage belt lag out of carousels 2–4.
One last tip: if storms are rolling through and surge pricing is ugly, grab a seat near baggage carousel 3, watch the fare in the app for 5–10 minutes, and book as soon as the multiplier drops below about 1.3x for downtown or 1.5x for East Memphis.
