Ride-share Style Local Apps

There’s no Uber or Lyft at MBJ, despite what people expect

At Sangster International’s T1, there are zero official Uber/Lyft options, and Reddit threads about Montego Bay repeat the same line: “there is no Uber.” Ride-share style local apps exist in Jamaica, but they’re not integrated into the airport pickup system, so you won’t walk out of arrivals and see an app pickup zone like you do in North America or Europe.

Once you’re in Montego Bay for a few days, some tech‑savvy locals talk about WhatsApp-based drivers and small local apps, but Reddit users say these are mostly for residents and regulars. Many of these services expect you to have a local Jamaican number, or at least an active WhatsApp contact already saved, which is a hurdle after a 4-hour flight when you’re still on roaming.

Ride-share style local apps are not a primary option out of MBJ, which means you’ll be choosing between the official taxi stand and prebooked private transfers instead. Flyers complain that taxis and private cars feel less transparent on pricing than Uber, especially when they’ve just seen a 2,000–3,000 JMD quote in a blog and then hear something higher at the curb.

When people on r/Jamaica ask “what app should I use from the airport,” regulars usually answer with “none” and point them to regular taxis or drivers. Long‑stay visitors say they save the numbers of two or three trusted drivers in their phone and then use WhatsApp like an ad‑hoc ride‑share system once they’re settled in town, not at the moment they exit customs.

Think of these local, app‑ish options as urban tools for after you’ve checked into your hotel, not as an arrival solution from T1 baggage claim. Use a licensed airport taxi or prebooked transfer for the first leg, then ask your driver for their WhatsApp and typical rates; that one move gives you your own “ride-share” contact list for the rest of the trip.
