T1-side South Indian tiffin before early morning departures

Tiffin Center sits in Chennai’s T1 domestic terminal, a straightforward stop if you want dosa, idli, or vada before boarding an IndiGo or SpiceJet flight. It’s inside security, so you can clear checks first and then eat without clock-watching at the entrance queue. Signage in T1 points to it along with a couple of coffee chains, so you won’t need more than a 2–3 minute walk from most domestic gates.

Menu focus is classic vegetarian South Indian: plain and masala dosas, idli with sambar, vada, pongal, and basic rice plates. Expect pricing in the ₹150–₹350 range for most tiffin items, which is reasonable for an Indian airport terminal. Filter coffee usually lands around ₹60–₹100, cheaper than the big international brands nearby. Portions run small-to-medium, so a dosa and coffee set works well for a light pre-flight meal without feeling weighed down.

Turnover is fastest at breakfast, roughly 05:00–09:00, when most T1 departures bunch up. That’s when the griddle is constantly working, so dosas come out hotter and crispier. Later in the day, choices can shrink toward whatever sells steadily, often idli, vada, and a few dosas. If your flight leaves after 22:00, don’t bank on the full menu; late-night options at MAA T1 tend to narrow to snacks and basic tiffin staples.

Service style is counter-order, pay-first, then wait for your token number to be called. During a busy 06:00 bank, give it 10–15 minutes from payment to plate; at quieter times it can be under 5 minutes. Seating is tight and shared, so solo travelers often end up sharing a table with another passenger or grabbing a quick stand-and-eat spot near the counter.

Plan one thing ahead: hit an ATM in T1 landside or use UPI/credit card at the counter, since change for large ₹2,000 notes and foreign cash is inconsistent once you’re in the domestic secure area.
