Rental cars at LNY give you full control of your schedule
Lanai Airport (LNY) has just one small Terminal 1, so picking up a rental car is straightforward and fast compared with bigger islands. On Lanai, driving yourself matters because resort shuttles and hotel cars tend to run on fixed schedules, and taxis can be scarce once you leave Lanai City. If you plan to hop between the Four Seasons at Manele Bay, Hulopoe Beach, and town more than once a day, having your own keys usually beats waiting on set pickup times.
All passenger operations at LNY run through Terminal 1, and rental car counters or meet-and-greet desks typically sit just outside the terminal’s single baggage claim area. Flights into Lanai are limited each day, so lines at the rental desks rarely look like Honolulu or Kahului. Still, if two Ohana or Mokulele-style commuter flights land within the same 30‑minute window, the few renters on duty can get backed up, so grab your bag and walk straight to the counter when you land.
The airport sits about 3 miles (roughly a 10‑minute drive) from Lanai City along Lanai Avenue, and about 8 miles (around 20 minutes) from Hulopoe Beach Park and the Four Seasons Resort Lanai. Daily rental rates on Lanai tend to run higher than the $40–$60 you might see advertised on Maui or Oahu, reflecting the island’s smaller fleet and higher operating costs. Factor in fuel from the single gas station in Lanai City and basic insurance when you compare rental costs to resort shuttle fees.
Most rental agreements on Lanai explicitly call out restrictions on driving unpaved roads, including some routes toward Shipwreck Beach and Garden of the Gods, so read the paper before you leave the Terminal 1 curb. A standard sedan or compact SUV is fine for the paved run between the airport, Lanai City, and Manele, but some companies offer higher-clearance vehicles for limited off-pavement use at a higher daily rate. Returning the car is simple: follow the single access road back to LNY, top off fuel in town first, and plan to be back at the lot 60–75 minutes before departure to clear check-in and security.
Tip: Reserve at least 1–2 weeks ahead for holiday periods, since LNY’s small on-island fleet can sell out completely when the resorts hit 90%+ occupancy.
