Free $0 cell phone lot beats paying short-term at LIH
The Cell Phone Waiting Area at Lihue Airport is a free lot (daily rate $0) set up for drivers waiting on arriving passengers, so you avoid the paid public parking charges that start as soon as you pull a ticket. It sits next to the on-airport car rental facilities, a short drive from the single terminal curb at LIH.
This is a true wait-in-your-car setup: you stay in your vehicle, watch flight status on your phone, and roll to the terminal curb on Ahukini Road only once your passenger texts that they are outside with bags in hand. The airport’s own parking page lists it as the separate Cellular Telephone Waiting Lot, distinct from the main public lot with hourly and daily fees.
Hours aren’t posted, but the lot functions whenever LIH flights run, which can mean late-night waits for West Coast arrivals around 9:00–11:00 p.m. It’s strictly short-term: no leaving the car, no overnight parking, and no using it as a cheap substitute for the regular lot, which currently runs a paid daily rate if you need to park and walk into the terminal.
Locals who know the small LIH layout often stage even farther out, at nearby shopping centers in Lihue town or along Nawiliwili Harbor access roads, then shift to the cell phone lot or straight to the curb once the arriving party texts “outside.” That hop from the lot by the rental car facilities to the terminal usually takes under 5 minutes in normal Kauai traffic.
Tip: Have your flyer text you only after they pass baggage claim and are standing on the curb; at Lihue’s compact terminal that can easily cut your curb time to under 3 minutes and avoid any need for paid parking.
