Service Overview
London Gatwick’s rail station is built into the South Terminal, making train the fastest and most dependable way into central London. You can choose between the premium non-stop Gatwick Express and the more flexible, usually better-value Thameslink and Southern services.
This option is best for solo travellers and business travellers who want reliability and predictable journey times, and it’s also very workable for families with luggage (level access and space varies by train). Compared with coaches or taxis, trains avoid road traffic delays and typically deliver the smoothest airport-to-city experience.
Route & Destinations
- Gatwick Express: non-stop to London Victoria in about 29–30 minutes. Victoria connects directly to the District, Circle and Victoria Underground lines.
- Southern: services to London Victoria and via key interchanges such as Clapham Junction (useful for onward rail and easy connections towards Vauxhall and beyond). Typical journey time 40–55 minutes depending on stops.
- Thameslink: direct trains through central London to London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras International. Expect roughly 30–50 minutes to central stations depending on your stop.
There is no direct Tube from Gatwick; you connect to the Underground at Victoria, London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon or St Pancras/King’s Cross (excellent coverage for most of London).
Pricing & Tickets
- Best-value fares are often on Thameslink/Southern: around £10.50–£10.70 using contactless (commonly off-peak/weekends). Prices vary by time and ticket type.
- Gatwick Express is usually higher, around £21 one-way; booking online in advance can reduce the cost.
- Buy via ticket machines and staffed ticket offices at Gatwick Airport station, or on operator apps/sites. Contactless payment is widely accepted for pay-as-you-go travel on eligible services.
If you’re price-sensitive, compare fares before you travel and consider Thameslink or Southern unless you specifically want the Express’ non-stop run to Victoria.
Schedule & Frequency
- Gatwick Express: twice an hour to Victoria (about every 30 minutes).
- Thameslink: typically very frequent through central London (often several trains per hour).
- Southern: frequent service pattern varies by time of day, with additional stops that can suit local destinations.
Peak hours can mean busier platforms and less luggage space—if you can, avoid the heaviest commuter periods. For late-night/early-morning travel, trains usually remain the best option, but always check live times for engineering works.
Practical Tips
- Pickup point: Gatwick Airport rail station is at the South Terminal. From the North Terminal, use the free inter-terminal shuttle (about 2 minutes, every 5–10 minutes).
- Luggage: look for end-of-carriage racks and overhead shelves; Thameslink/Southern can be better value but may feel busier at peaks.
- Accessibility: step-free routes are generally available within the terminals/station—ask staff for the best lift routes and assistance.
- Real-time info: use operator apps (Gatwick Express, Thameslink, Southern) and National Rail updates for platform changes and disruption.
- Alternatives: National Express coaches can be cheaper but take 1–2 hours and are traffic-dependent; taxis/ride-hail are door-to-door but typically £60+ and slower at busy times.
