S-Bahn express commuter rail

DB’s S5X can beat the regular S5 by several minutes

The S5X is an S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland express variant that runs between Leipzig/Halle Airport station and Leipzig/Halle cities, making fewer stops than the standard S5 line. Trains depart from the underground airport station directly beneath the Zentralterminal, with clear “S5X” route markers on DB’s electronic displays and in the DB Navigator app.

You reach the S-Bahn platforms via escalators and lifts from the Zentralterminal arrivals level, and the station is fully inside the airport complex, so there is no need for a shuttle bus from Terminal B or other buildings. Look for green “S” symbols and signs marked “Bahnhof/Train” once you exit baggage claim; walking time from most baggage belts to the platform is about 5 minutes at a normal pace.

Most foreign-language airport guides just say “take the S-Bahn to Leipzig or Halle” and rarely mention the S5X by name, which is how people end up on the slower S5 all-stops pattern. On DB departure boards, check the line column for “S5X” and compare the minutes in the journey column; even a 3–7 minute saving can matter if you are watching a tight check-in or hotel arrival time.

Local commuters in Leipzig and Halle often filter by “fastest connection” in the DB Navigator app and pick the S5X when it appears instead of the S5, especially during peak times around 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:00. If you mirror that habit, you can trim a few minutes off the airport link without touching a taxi rank or rideshare.

Because German line designations are written as “S5” and “S5X” on the same platform, some visitors just board the first green S-Bahn they see and only realize later that they took the stopping service. If you do not read German, match both the line number “S5X” and the destination city on the front of the train and on the platform monitors before stepping on.

One last tip: install the DB Navigator app over airport Wi‑Fi in the Zentralterminal before you head downstairs, then pin your hotel or Leipzig/Halle main station as a favorite; that way you can spot the next S5X at a glance and avoid guessing on the platform.
