S-Bahn commuter rail

€4–€6 into Leipzig or Halle on S5 if you time it right

The S5 S-Bahn runs directly from Leipzig/Halle Airport station to Leipzig Hbf and Halle (Saale) Hbf, and regulars call it the default choice for budget trips into both cities. The station sits under the terminal bridge by the Zentralterminal, so you head down one level from arrivals to reach the S-Bahn platforms. Trains share tracks with regional and long-distance services, so you want the green S-Bahn symbol and line S5 or S5X on the departure board, not just “Leipzig” or “Halle”.

Daytime single tickets into Leipzig Hbf or Halle Hbf usually land in the €4–€6 range from the airport, using the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) zones that cover LEJ and the city centers. You can buy tickets from the DB/MDV machines on the station level under the Zentralterminal or in the DB Navigator app before you leave baggage claim. Remember: this is standard S-Bahn, so there’s 2nd class only and no seat reservations; you just hop on and sit or stand.

Leipzig/Halle Airport station has two island platforms, and S-Bahn services toward Leipzig usually leave in the direction signed for “Leipzig Hbf via Leipzig Messe,” while S5 services toward Halle head for “Halle (Saale) Hbf via Schkeuditz.” Because regional RE trains to Leipzig or Halle also use these platforms, people sometimes board a fast train that actually skips the airport on the return, then get stuck riding back from a different station. Always confirm the line number S5 or S5X and the little airport pictogram on the station displays.

Daytime headways typically feel like every 30 minutes on S5/S5X, but late evening drops closer to hourly, so missing a 22:30 train can mean sitting around until roughly 23:30. That’s where DB Navigator helps: punch in “Leipzig/Halle Airport” to “Leipzig Hbf” or “Halle (Saale) Hbf” and you’ll see S-Bahn vs regional options side by side. Regular commuters check this before they even exit Terminal B so they know if it’s worth waiting for a faster RE instead of taking the next S5.

Local riders heading into Leipzig often skip a crowded S5 and grab a regional train that leaves from the same platforms, especially during weekday peaks around 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:00. Those RE services can shave a few minutes off the airport–Leipzig Hbf trip and feel less packed. The trade-off: not every regional train stops at smaller intermediate stations, so if your final stop is outside Leipzig Hbf or Halle Hbf, double-check the calling pattern listed on the platform screens.

One tip: screenshot your DB Navigator search while still on airport Wi‑Fi in the Zentralterminal, then follow the platform number and line (S5/S5X vs RE) on the phone screen rather than trying to decode everything fresh on the underground concourse signs.
