Friday 6 p.m. arrivals can mean 45+ minutes to a car
LAX-it is LAX’s off-terminal pickup zone for Uber, Lyft, and regular taxis, reached by a free green shuttle or on foot. From stepping out of Terminals 1–8 or B to sitting in a car can run anywhere from 15 minutes off-peak to 45+ minutes during heavy banks of arrivals. The idea: pull all app-based pickups into one lot just east of Terminal 1 and clear some space on the horseshoe roadway.
The LAX-it shuttle is free and usually shows up every few minutes at signed green “LAX-it” stops outside Terminals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and B. Reddit reports put the ride itself at about 5–10 minutes around the loop to the lot when traffic isn’t jammed. Shuttles are low-floor buses, but at peak times riders mention packed interiors and standing room only, especially on Friday evenings and Sunday nights.
Once at the lot, all rideshare pickups use app-assigned zones while traditional taxis line up in a separate lane. Early View From The Wing coverage quoted readers waiting 45 minutes just for an Uber, and more recent r/LosAngeles threads still call the place “a mess during Friday evening arrivals.” Surge pricing for Uber and Lyft still applies here, so you can pay the same inflated fare you’d see curbside while also dealing with the transfer.
Locals point out that the real time hit is often the queue plus app wait, not the shuttle. One Redditor timed a 7-minute shuttle from Terminal 4 but then burned 25 minutes in line and waiting for a driver, turning a quick exit into a 30+ minute slog. Signs for zones can be blocked by crowds, and multiple posts mention confusion over lining up for the lettered pickup rows shown in the app.
Regulars have developed workarounds. Some walk to LAX-it from Terminal 1 or 2 in about 10–15 minutes with just a carry-on rather than wait for a packed shuttle. Others skip LAX-it entirely: they take FlyAway or Metro to Westchester or downtown, then call Uber/Lyft from there to dodge surges. For short rides to nearby hotels, several frequent flyers simply grab a metered taxi from the terminal curb and avoid the lot.
One more thing: if anyone in your group has mobility issues or a lot of checked bags, budget extra time or consider a curbside taxi instead of LAX-it. Build a 30–45 minute buffer from baggage claim to car during Friday 4–9 p.m. and Sunday evenings so a backed-up lot doesn’t blow your plans.
