Terminal 8

2 airlines 1 restaurant 1 lounge

Terminal 8 hosts 2 airlines. It's American Airlines's home turf at LAX. You'll find 1 dining option, 1 lounge here.

Gates 80–88 sit in Terminal 8, but every lounge is back in Terminal 7

Terminal 8 is United’s small end-cap concourse at LAX, handling mainly United and United Express flights out of gates in the low 80s, while all the United lounges sit next door in Terminal 7. You stay airside between 7 and 8, so you can walk the connector in roughly 5–10 minutes without touching security again. Think of 7 and 8 as one long United pier, with your boarding pass deciding which half you use.

United runs most of its domestic departures here, with regional United Express flights also using the gate 80s, so check your gate on the United app before you commit to sitting down in Terminal 7. If your boarding pass shows 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87 or 88, you’re on the Terminal 8 side of the operation. Plan a slightly earlier airport arrival for morning banks that push multiple United narrowbodies off these stands between about 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Lounges are the big quirk: Terminal 8 has zero of its own, while Terminal 7 has a United Club and the United Polaris Lounge for eligible passengers. The walk from the Polaris Lounge near the mid-70s gates to gate 80 typically runs under 10 minutes at a normal pace, so don’t burn a lounge visit by arriving at the airport too late. Build the buffer if you want a full drink and a shower before a long-haul.

Food options in Terminal 8 are barebones, with Carl’s Jr sitting as the main quick-service spot on the concourse and pricing roughly a dollar or two higher than a typical street location for a combo meal. If you want more choice than a burger and fries, eat in Terminal 7’s larger food court cluster, then walk down the corridor to 8 closer to boarding time. Carl’s Jr is fine for a last-minute burger around a late evening departure when most other outlets have closed by 10 p.m.

Shops inside Terminal 8 are minimal, so don’t expect a full duty-free spread or multiple tech kiosks at the 80-gate pier. You’ll mainly find basic newsstand-style options back toward the Terminal 7 side, selling bottled water, snacks, and magazines, with prices around $4–$6 for a drink and $3–$5 for a snack bar. If you need a wider range of travel gear or electronics, grab those in Terminal 7 before you head to gates 80–88.

Boarding areas at the 80s fill quickly during peak United banks, especially when two or three flights board from adjacent gates like 82, 84, and 86 within the same 30-minute window. Power outlets are limited along some seating rows, so charge devices in the United Club in Terminal 7 or at a power pole near the earlier 70s gates before walking down. Don’t waste a Polaris visit on a 35-minute connection; aim for at least an hour if you want to sit, eat, and still make the walk to a far 80s gate.

Local regulars with United status often check in at Terminal 7, head straight up to the United Club or Polaris Lounge for 30–60 minutes, then start walking to Terminal 8 about 30 minutes before departure when boarding for groups 1 and 2 usually kicks off. They watch the United app’s “boarding” timer and only leave the lounge once it hits roughly 40 minutes before departure for a mainline domestic flight. That pattern works well if your gate is 80–83; add 5 minutes if you’re down at 87 or 88.

Watch one detail on tight connections: if you land at a high 70s gate in Terminal 7 and depart from a low 80s gate in Terminal 8, you can still make a 40–45 minute connection as long as your inbound isn’t late, because the walk is basically a straight shot past the food and down the corridor. The choke point is usually boarding, not walking time, so head directly to your 80s gate first, then backtrack to food only if you see a delay appear on the display. One last tip: check the lounge and gate maps in the United app before you land so you already know which direction to turn when you step into the terminal.
