Rideshare

Tap the app as soon as you exit KOA’s Main terminal

Lyft runs at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) and picks up at the public curb outside the Main terminal, not in a separate rideshare lot. After you grab bags from the open-air claim area, walk straight to the curb where the regular passenger drop-off and pickup lanes sit. Turn on location services so your driver can see you at Keahole Airport Road without the back-and-forth texts.

From KOA to Kailua-Kona town (about 7–8 miles), most riders see fares that often land under typical taxi quotes, especially outside the 7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m. peaks. The app shows the price before you confirm, so you can compare against the roughly 15–20 minute drive time into town. For resort runs up the Kohala Coast, expect 25–40 minutes on Highway 19 and higher surge risk when big mainland flights arrive in banks.

KOA is small, with just the Main terminal, so there’s no terminal-hopping to find your Lyft. Flights from the mainland often cluster around midday, and that’s when wait times can stretch beyond 10–15 minutes as drivers juggle multiple pings. If the ETA jumps above 20 minutes in the app, consider cancelling before the grace period ends and rechecking after a few minutes; pricing and wait times can shift quickly when one or two cars free up.

Lyft works well if you’re comfortable with app-based rides instead of fixed shuttles or posted taxi queues. There’s no dedicated airport surcharge menu at KOA, so what you see in the app is the total before tip. Add your airline and flight number in the ride notes if you like; the Main terminal uses shared open-air gates, so drivers mainly rely on your pin and the “Arrivals” signage off Keahole Airport Road.

One tip: order your Lyft only after you pass the small baggage claim and step onto the curb; KOA’s open layout means bags often appear in under 10 minutes, and ordering too early can run your driver’s wait timer before you’re ready to load up.
