Trip reports from 2022–2024 say there’s no operating Subway
Older KOA concession maps list Subway, but recent flyers on Reddit and TripAdvisor from 2022 and 2023 only mention Burger King and small snack stands. One r/travel poster in 2023 flatly says, “There’s no Subway at KOA, just Burger King and some snacks,” and no one in that thread corrects them. For planning, assume you can’t get a made-to-order Subway sandwich in the Main terminal today.
KOA is a small, mostly open-air airport with just a handful of food counters beyond the Main security checkpoint, and regulars repeatedly name Burger King as the only big-chain option. TripAdvisor user “coast2coast” wrote that food choices were “super limited” in 2023 with “definitely no Subway,” which lines up with Flyertalk threads comparing KOA to HNL and only tying KOA to Burger King on the fast-food side. If a Subway kiosk exists, it’s quiet enough that frequent flyers ignore it.
People who want a sandwich chain fix usually hit a Subway in Kailua‑Kona or along Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway (HI‑19) before driving the 7–10 miles to the airport. Others grab premade sandwiches at local grocery stores like Safeway or Target in town and bring them through security, since TSA at KOA treats solid food the same as at any other U.S. airport. Flyers posting from 2022 onward say they do this specifically because they don’t expect to find Subway inside KOA.
Complaints from u/hawaiiflyguy and others center on having to choose between Burger King and packaged snacks once airside, with zero mention of a working Subway line, menu board, or seating. That’s a strong signal not to rely on it for lunch or dinner before a 5–6 hour mainland flight. Tip: eat in town or pack a sandwich before you pass the single Main terminal security checkpoint; treat any Subway sign inside KOA as legacy, not a guarantee of service.
