Gate-side gyros in T1 before your KGS departure

Athens Protasis sits airside in Terminal T1 at Kos International Airport “Ippokratis,” right after security and before the main international gates. It’s one of the few spots in the terminal focused on local Greek flavors rather than generic sandwiches and snacks. The setup is fast-casual, so you order at the counter, pay, and grab a seat or take it back toward your gate.

The menu leans Greek: expect gyros, souvlaki, Greek salads, and pies like spanakopita, alongside espresso, soft drinks, and bottled water. Prices sit in typical airport territory, with most mains falling in the €9–€15 range and coffee around €3. Portions run bigger than the pre-made sandwiches you’ll see in the smaller kiosks elsewhere in T1.

Service works on a quick turnaround, useful if your boarding pass says gates open in 30–40 minutes. Food is prepared to order on the grill, so factor in a 10–15 minute wait at busier morning and early-evening departure banks. If your flight leaves from one of the lower-numbered gates, you can still see the main departures board from nearby seating and keep an eye on boarding groups.

Lean Greek here: go for a pork or chicken gyro plate, a Greek salad with feta, or a slice of spinach pie if you just want something light before a 1–2 hour hop to Athens or the islands. Coffee is solid by airport standards, with both freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino on offer, which suits hot July and August departures when temperatures outside KGS regularly hit 30°C or more.

Watch out for peak pressure before early-morning departures to ATH and LGW, when queues can stretch 8–10 people deep and seats nearby fill fast. If your flight boards at a remote stand and you know a bus transfer is coming, finish eating at least 20 minutes before the printed departure time; gate staff at KGS sometimes start calling passengers earlier than you’d expect.

Practical tip: clear security, walk straight to Athens Protasis in T1, order once you’ve checked your exact gate on the screen, then carry your tray to seating closest to your number so you can head out as soon as boarding is announced.
