RWF 300–500 gets you into town if you pack light

Kigali City Bus is the rock-bottom option from Kigali International Airport (KGL) T1 if you’re okay carrying your own bag and squeezing onto local commuter buses. There’s no dedicated airport city bus: you walk out to the main road (KN 5 Road) about 300–500 meters from the terminal and use regular routes heading toward downtown Kigali.

Buses run from roughly 06:00 to 20:00, with frequencies around every 10–20 minutes in peak daytime hours on major routes like Remera–Downtown. You pay the driver or conductor in Rwandan francs, usually under RWF 500 per ride, so have small notes ready because card or foreign currency isn’t accepted on these city buses.

The basic flow is airport T1 → walk to KN 5 Road → local bus toward Remera or central Kigali → possible transfer at a hub like Giporoso or Remera Taxi Park. Because there’s no luggage hold and doors are narrow, this only makes sense if your bag is a backpack or a single small suitcase you can lift quickly.

How to use Kigali City Bus step by step

  • 1. Exit T1: After collecting bags at Kigali International Airport, walk out of the terminal and follow signs toward the main road (KN 5 Road), about 5–10 minutes on foot.
  • 2. Reach the roadside stops: Stand on the city-bound side of KN 5 Road, heading toward Remera and downtown Kigali; you’ll usually see other passengers waiting at informal stops.
  • 3. Check the route boards: Look for minibuses or larger buses with signs mentioning Remera, Giporoso, or “Town” (central Kigali); ask the conductor “Town?” to confirm before boarding.
  • 4. Pay in cash on board: Fares typically range from RWF 300 to RWF 500 per segment; hand the conductor a 500 or 1,000 note and wait for change while you move inside quickly.
  • 5. Transfer if needed: If your bus terminates at Remera Taxi Park or another hub instead of downtown, follow staff or crowd flow and board a second bus toward your final neighborhood.
  • 6. Get off near your stay: Watch on offline maps; most guesthouses in central Kigali sit within a 5–10 minute walk from major stops like Downtown or Kacyiru.
  • 7. Keep a backup plan: After 20:00 or with heavy bags, switch to an airport taxi or app-based car for the last leg.

One practical tip: pull RWF cash from the ATM inside T1 before walking out, and keep at least RWF 2,000 in small bills just for buses so you’re not stuck hunting for change at the roadside.
