JFK Train to NYC: AirTrain, Subway & LIRR Guide

Service Overview

JFK’s rail option is a two-step system: AirTrain JFK connects all terminals to Jamaica Station and Howard Beach, where you transfer to the NYC Subway or the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). It’s the smartest way to avoid road traffic and is available 24/7.

Best for: solo travelers and budget-minded visitors (AirTrain + subway), business travelers who want speed and predictability (AirTrain + LIRR), and anyone arriving at peak traffic times. Families with lots of luggage can do it, but a taxi or shuttle may feel easier for door-to-door convenience.

Route & Destinations

  • AirTrain JFK picks up at all passenger terminals and runs to Jamaica Station (for subway/LIRR) and Howard Beach (for the A subway line).
  • To Midtown Manhattan: AirTrain to Jamaica, then E subway or LIRR to Penn Station (or Grand Central Madison on some LIRR services).
  • To Lower Manhattan/Brooklyn: AirTrain to Howard Beach for the A line, or Jamaica for J/Z (good for parts of Downtown Brooklyn/Lower East Side).

Typical total travel times: about 50–90 minutes via subway depending on destination and wait times; about 40–60 minutes via LIRR (often the fastest rail option). AirTrain itself is typically 10–15 minutes to Jamaica or Howard Beach.

Coverage is best for Manhattan and Brooklyn areas near major subway/LIRR hubs; from there you can connect across NYC by subway.

Pricing & Tickets

  • AirTrain JFK: free within the airport; $8.25 to exit/enter at Jamaica or Howard Beach (official sources may list $8.00; expect the current gate charge to be around this level).
  • NYC Subway: $2.90 per ride (pay separately from AirTrain).
  • LIRR: typically $13–$19 depending on peak/off-peak and destination, plus the AirTrain fee.

Buy AirTrain fare at the station vending machines before the fare gates at Jamaica/Howard Beach. For subway, use OMNY tap-to-pay (contactless card/device) or a MetroCard. For LIRR, buy with the MTA TrainTime app, ticket machines, or ticket windows at Jamaica. If you’re doing multiple subway rides, OMNY’s weekly fare cap can help, but it does not include AirTrain or LIRR.

Schedule & Frequency

  • AirTrain: runs 24/7, about every 7–15 minutes (often more frequent at busy times).
  • Subway: typically every 2–10 minutes depending on line and time; late nights can be less frequent.
  • LIRR: generally every 15–30 minutes; peak-hour trains can be crowded, but still predictable.

For very late-night/early-morning arrivals, AirTrain is steady; subway and LIRR still run, but plan for longer waits and occasional service changes.

Practical Tips

  • Finding the pickup: follow terminal signs for “AirTrain”; stations are connected by elevated walkways.
  • Luggage: AirTrain and LIRR are easier with suitcases than the subway (fewer stairs, more space). Avoid rush hour if you have bulky bags.
  • Accessibility: many stations have elevators, but outages happen—check MTA/Port Authority alerts if you need step-free routing.
  • Real-time info: use MTA TrainTime for LIRR schedules/tickets; use MTA apps or transit apps (Google Maps/Citymapper) for subway routing and disruptions.
  • Best alternatives: if you want door-to-door or have multiple large bags, consider a yellow taxi (flat fare to Manhattan plus surcharges/tolls) or a shared shuttle—faster only when roads are clear.
