Osaka Itami T: no duty free cosmetics, despite the sign
Osaka Itami Airport (ITM) runs only domestic flights out of Terminal T, so there is no true duty free cosmetics shop here. Some airport maps and older blogs still mention duty free, but current information from KIX Duty Free confirms Itami does not operate duty free retail at all. If you’re expecting tax-free fragrances or skincare before a Tokyo or Sapporo hop, you’ll be disappointed.
Any cosmetics you see airside in T sit in standard domestic shops and price at the usual Japanese retail level, with consumption tax included at 10%. You might find big brands in general stores near central security, but nothing rings up as duty free and there’s no option to pick up on return. For actual duty free pricing, you need an international ticket out of Kansai (KIX), not Itami.
The KIX Duty Free website explicitly lists Itami only as an airport information item and then directs all tax-free shopping to Kansai Airport, roughly 50 minutes away by airport limousine bus. That’s the tell: if your flight number out of Osaka starts with domestic carriers like JAL/JL or ANA/NH and ends at a Japanese airport code, you won’t see a duty free cosmetics counter at ITM.
Planning tip: if you care about discounted cosmetics, buy at Kansai (KIX) on your inbound or outbound international leg, or in Tokyo, and treat Itami’s shops as last-minute top-ups at regular prices only.
