Silver Line Metrorail

Train

Train 50-70 min from IAD to central DC with at least one transfer $2-6 (distance- and time-of-day-based Metro fare within standard WMATA range)

50–70 minutes into DC for $2–6: that’s the Silver Line

The Silver Line Metrorail runs directly from the IAD station beside the Main Terminal into DC for about $2–6, depending on distance and time of day. Trains run every 6–12 minutes at peak and about every 10–15 minutes off‑peak, with longer gaps late nights and on weekends. It’s the low‑stress, low‑cost option if you’re heading to downtown DC, Foggy Bottom, Rosslyn, or Capitol Hill and can spare about an hour.

The station sits just outside the Main Terminal ticketing hall; follow the “Metrorail” signs past baggage claim and you’ll be on the pedestrian bridge in a couple of minutes. From IAD into central DC, plan on at least one transfer, usually at Rosslyn or L’Enfant Plaza, bringing total travel time to roughly 50–70 minutes. Compared with an Uber that can run $60+ in traffic, regulars on r/dcmetro say the fare feels like a bargain even at the upper end of the WMATA range.

Trains head first through Reston and Tysons before joining the Orange/Blue lines corridor near Rosslyn station. A common run is IAD → Rosslyn → Foggy Bottom or L’Enfant Plaza, with one quick transfer. Flyers who do Dulles a lot say they “budget an hour and a bit” from IAD to the Hill using a Silver Line to L’Enfant transfer. The trade: slower than many European airport rails, but far more predictable than I‑66 at 5 p.m.

What regulars do: they pick cars by door position. Toward downtown, frequent riders like the front cars from IAD so they step off closer to key escalators at Rosslyn and L’Enfant. Some DC locals also ride only to Rosslyn, then walk 5–10 minutes to nearby hotels instead of staying on for one more stop and backtracking on foot.

Watch out for weekend track work and late‑night gaps. WMATA’s own advisories sometimes show Silver Line headways stretching much longer than 15 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays, plus extra mid‑trip transfers. Escalators and elevators at the IAD station also back up after big evening banks from A, B, C, and D, so people with checked bags often add 10 extra minutes just to get from platform to sidewalk.

How to ride it, step by step:

  • 1. From your gate in A, B, C, D, or Z, take the AeroTrain or mobile lounge to the Main Terminal and follow “Baggage Claim/Exit.”
  • 2. Follow the purple “Metrorail” signs up the escalator from baggage claim to the pedestrian bridge that leads to the IAD Metro station.
  • 3. At the station entrance, buy a SmarTrip card or tap a contactless bank card or phone at the gate; expect a $2–6 fare into central DC.
  • 4. On the platform, board the Silver Line train toward Largo; front cars help at Rosslyn and L’Enfant for faster transfers.
  • 5. For downtown DC, transfer at Rosslyn or L’Enfant Plaza to the Blue, Orange, Yellow, or Green lines as needed, following the overhead line-color signs carefully.
  • 6. When returning to IAD, check the WMATA app or website for any Silver Line disruptions and leave at least 70–80 minutes for train plus airport security.

One tip: if your flight is early Sunday or late at night, check WMATA’s weekend or service advisory page before committing; a $50 Lyft can beat a missed boarding time.
