Smithsonian Museum Store

D

Gate-side Smithsonian merch in D Terminal

This Smithsonian Museum Store sits in Terminal D at Dulles, handy if your United or international flight uses the D gates and you want DC-themed souvenirs without going downtown. It’s post-security, so you only see it after the aerotrain or shuttle ride from the Main Terminal.

Expect the usual Smithsonian mix: branded tees and hoodies, space-themed toys tied to the Air & Space Museum, and coffee-table books about the National Mall and American history. Prices run higher than regular gift shops — figure $20–$35 for shirts and $10–$25 for toys — but still under what you’d pay at some in-museum stores on the Mall.

Kids get sucked in by the NASA and dinosaur sections, with small model rockets, plush toys, and science kits that actually fit in a backpack or under-seat bag. Adults gravitate to the museum-style prints, magnets under $10, and art books that can burn a good three-hour flight from Dulles to LAX or SFO.

Lines here move quickly; you’re usually out in under 5–10 minutes unless a widebody at a nearby D-gate just arrived and dumped a full 777 or 787. Staff are used to tight boarding times and will tell you straight if your 7:15 p.m. flight is already lining up.

Best move: grab small, flat items here and skip bulky models or framed pieces; your 22 x 14 inch carry-on already fights for overhead bin space on those United 737s and A320s out of D.
