Duty Free

Near the A/B train stop, this duty free is your main liquor and perfume stop

Duty Free - Concourse A/B Center sits in the central hub between Concourses A and B at IAD, after security, so you can stop in no matter if you’re flying from an A or B gate. It’s the standard walk-through style shop you hit when you come off the AeroTrain or walk over from the Z gates. Hours flex with traffic, but it’s generally open from early morning bank (around 6:00) through the late-night Europe departures.

Alcohol and tobacco drive the space: you’ll see large walls of 1L spirits, multi-bottle promo packs, and carton-priced cigarettes lined up along the central aisle. Prices run below regular U.S. retail because of duty-free rules, especially on big-brand whisky and cognac, though last-minute single bottles of mid-range labels often land in the $25–$60 range. Fragrance and cosmetics from the usual brands fill the side fixtures, with standard travel sets and gift boxes that fit cabin baggage rules.

Selection leans hard toward global name brands rather than niche finds, so think Johnnie Walker, Jack Daniel’s, Hennessy, Grey Goose, and the major designer fragrance houses. Snacks and chocolates sit up front near the tills, mainly gift-style multi-bars and tins that work as a quick $10–$30 souvenir. Staff routinely ask to see your boarding pass and confirm you’re on an international departure out of A or B, since true duty-free sales apply only to those flights.

Watch the timing: if you have a tight 40-minute connection from C or D, the shuttle over plus the central location here can eat most of that. Bags are usually sealed at checkout for international routes, which matters if you still have another security check ahead. One practical tip: if you’re price-sensitive, snap a photo of shelf tags on a 1L bottle you recognize and compare against your home airport’s duty free on your next trip; IAD’s A/B shop often matches but doesn’t always beat big hubs like JFK or LHR.
