International Terminal

International Terminal hosts Air Zimbabwe. It's Air Zimbabwe's home turf at HRE.

Three to five minutes: that’s the walk from old check-in

International flights at Harare now leave from the newer International Terminal, a single pier of gates reached by a 3–5 minute indoor walk from the older check-in hall. Air Zimbabwe and other regional and long-haul carriers use this wing for departures and arrivals, so your boarding pass might list the International Terminal even if you first drop bags in the legacy building. Think “one long corridor” rather than multiple concourses, with all international gates branching off the same main spine.

Layout: compact pier, but far gates run 5–12 minutes

Past security, everything sits on one level along that new pier, described by one r/Zimbabwe regular as “fairly small” with “all in one area.” That said, the expansion pushed some gates out, and locals now quote 5–12 minutes on foot from security to the furthest doors, roughly double the old 2–3 minute walk they remember. Build the buffer: if your boarding pass shows a high gate number at the end of the pier, don’t leave seating or the bathroom run to the last second.

Check-in flows: old hall in, new terminal out

You can still check in for international flights in the original departures zone, then follow signs for the International Terminal and walk the 3–5 minutes to the new wing. One Reddit poster says the whole departure process “felt fairly quick” because there aren’t many gates compared with big hubs in Europe or the US. Treat it like a normal outstation: arrive at least 1.5 hours before an Air Zimbabwe regional flight, and add time if you’re on a long-haul with extra document checks.

Khami Lounge: main refuge near international departures

Khami Lounge is the primary lounge option in the International Terminal and sits airside near the international gates, used by several full-service airlines and accessible with certain lounge programs. Opening hours tend to track peak departures, so expect it open around major early-evening long-haul banks rather than 24/7. It’s worth checking at check-in if your Air Zimbabwe ticket or status grants access, because there are no catalogued sit-down restaurants in this pier to fall back on during a delay.

Food and shopping: plan to eat before security

Inside the International Terminal pier, reviews and airport data list no named restaurants or branded shops yet, just basic kiosks and small stands near selected gates. Prices for drinks and snacks skew above city level, as usual, but selection is limited compared with Johannesburg or Doha. If you want a proper meal before an Air Zimbabwe evening departure, eat in town or in the landside area of the airport, then treat the international side as a backup for bottled water and last-minute snacks only.

Arrivals: watch the “vet passport” checks

On arrival into Harare, you come into the new international zone, then head to immigration, baggage claim, and customs in sequence, with queues varying by bank of flights. One r/Zimbabwe user reports being stopped in arrivals by a group “without uniforms (at most a reflective bib)” asking for veterinary passports, which raised doubts about who was actually official. Hand passports, pet documents, or money only to staff with clear ID at marked counters, and use the green or red customs channels instead of side doors where ad-hoc checks sometimes happen.

What regulars do and one last tip

Regulars on r/Zimbabwe say they treat Robert Gabriel Mugabe International like any other mid-size international field and simply pad time for the new walking distances. People who “have frequented the Airport for a long time” now plan an extra 5–12 minutes after security so they are already near their gate by boarding minus 30. One practical move: once you clear security in the International Terminal, buy water immediately at the first kiosk you see, then walk straight to your actual gate before you sit down and open your laptop.
