Terminal 3

1 airline

Terminal 3 hosts Mokulele Airlines.

Five-minute shuttle ride, totally different airport vibe

Terminal 3 sits on the Diamond Head side of HNL, a separate little commuter facility used by Mokulele Airlines for neighbor island flights. It’s not walk-up from Terminals 1 or 2 in any practical way, especially with bags, so plan on using the airport-operated shuttle from the main complex. Think small building, ground-level boarding, and prop planes instead of jets.

Mokulele departures and arrivals all run out of Terminal 3, so if your ticket shows Mokulele but your inbound is, say, Hawaiian or a mainland carrier into Terminal 1 or 2, you have an extra step after landing. You’ll move from your arrival gate in T1/T2 down to the curb and over to the shuttle stop, then ride out to T3 for your onward hop. Build at least a 45–60 minute cushion from mainline arrival to Mokulele boarding time.

The shuttle between Terminals 1/2 and 3 is airport-run and free, but flyers on Reddit say the timing feels loose rather than every-10-minutes reliable. People report waiting anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes, especially in the afternoon. If you’re tight on time from a delayed mainland flight, head straight for the shuttle; don’t stop to shop in T1 or T2 first.

Inside Terminal 3, amenities are stripped down to basics: a few rows of chairs, restrooms, and usually only vending machines for drinks and snacks. Reviews complain that there are no sit-down restaurants, no coffee counter, and no retail shops in this building. Prices on the machines run typical airport-high, and selection can be limited late in the day.

Food strategy: eat in Terminal 1 or 2 before you move. Regular Mokulele flyers say they grab a meal and water in T1/T2, then head for the shuttle about 45–60 minutes before their scheduled departure from T3. Locals even mention hanging out airside in the bigger terminals, then shifting over once they see their Mokulele flight is on the board and still on time.

Seating in T3 can feel tight on peak neighbor-island bank times, especially mornings before 10:00 a.m. when multiple Mokulele flights line up. A Yelp review mentions people standing along the walls when things are busy. If you like space, don’t be first on the shuttle three hours early; use that time in T1 or T2 instead, where seating and power outlets are easier to find.

Finding Terminal 3 trips up first-timers because terminal signage at HNL focuses on Terminals 1, 2, and the inter-island walkways. Several TripAdvisor reviews mention following signs to inter-island gates and only later realizing Mokulele is out at T3. On arrival into HNL, ask a ground agent specifically for “Terminal 3 Mokulele shuttle” so you get pointed to the right curb pickup.

One last thing: don’t plan on walking the whole way from the main complex to T3 along the road. r/travel users call it awkward with roller bags due to distance, traffic, and patchy sidewalks over that far side of the field. Wait for the shuttle, even if the posted board doesn’t show an exact time. Tip: once you land in Honolulu on another airline, stop in T1/T2 for food and restroom, then head curbside and treat the shuttle ride as the final leg of your trip out to Mokulele.
