€4–5 gets you from HEL to Helsinki Central on the P train

The P train is one of two commuter rail lines from Helsinki Airport, running the ring route in the opposite direction to the I train and reaching Helsinki Central in about 30 minutes in normal conditions. It shares the same airport station and ABC ticket as the I train, so you buy the same €4–5 HSL ABC ticket for both. Locals on r/Helsinki keep repeating the same rule: if you just want the city center, take whichever of P or I shows up first.

From airport Terminals 1 and 2, follow the blue train symbols down to the single rail station under the terminal, where both P and I trains use the same two platforms. Trains run roughly every 10 minutes combined in daytime, which means each of P and I is about every 20 minutes. Late at night, users report that real travel times can creep up to 35 minutes if there are small delays, even though many guides still quote 27–30 minutes.

The P train direction helps slightly if you are heading to the eastern side of the ring, such as Tikkurila, which riders say comes a few minutes faster on P than on I. The same P train also connects you to long‑distance rail at Tikkurila station, where you can connect to intercity services toward Tampere or Kuopio from the same HSL ABC ticket zone boundary. Regular airport workers on Reddit say they only check whether it is P or I when they care about stops like Tikkurila or intermediate suburbs.

Confusion mainly comes from the naming: signs in the terminal say “trains to Helsinki” and only once you reach the platform do you see P and I listed on the digital boards. One r/travel user described arriving after 20 hours awake and staring at P vs I with no idea which side to choose. Another common mistake is getting off at Pasila, one stop before Helsinki Central, because Pasila looks big and modern and feels like it should be the main station.

What regulars actually do: they load the HSL app, buy a single ABC ticket for €4–5, and then check the live map to see which of P or I is arriving first. Some even watch the countdown on the platform clocks and adjust their walking speed from arrivals accordingly. For a simple airport–city ride, your best move is to walk straight to the station, ignore the letter, and board the first P or I that lists “Helsinki” on the screen.
