Near T1 check-in, this is where you rent trolleys

Smarte Carte at Hobart International Airport sits landside near T1 check-in, handling the luggage trolleys you see stacked around the departures area. You’ll pay a small fee per trolley (machines take cards and coins), then get part of it back when you return it to a dock. It’s all self-service, so you don’t wait on staff or a counter.

The trolleys are built for full suitcases plus smaller cabin bags, which helps if you’ve got two 23 kg checked bags on a longer trip. You grab one from a Smarte Carte rack near the main doors or baggage drop counters, load up, and roll straight to the Jetstar or Qantas check-in lines in T1. Height and handle are fine for most people, even if you’re pushing with one hand and holding a coffee in the other.

You’ll also see Smarte Carte units in the arrivals hall across from the single baggage belt, handy if two flights land close together and everyone is crowding the carousel. There’s usually at least one functioning rack in both arrivals and departures, and the system runs 24/7 even if some airline desks close after the last evening flight. Screens on the machines show fees clearly before you tap or insert coins, so you know the charge upfront.

Tip: keep a $2 coin handy in case a card reader on one unit glitches and you need to switch to another rack quickly.
