United’s Havana flights sometimes use HAV’s older Terminal 2

Terminal 2 at José Martí International Airport sits separate from Terminals 1, 3, and 5 and has a reputation as the smaller, older international building that can still handle United departures to the U.S. Flyers on United threads repeatedly warn that many Havana taxi drivers default to Terminal 3, so pay attention to what your United itinerary or boarding pass actually lists as the terminal.

This building functions as an international terminal with a compact layout: one check-in zone at the front, a simple security line behind it, and a short walk to the gates. United Airlines is the headline carrier here when it’s assigned, and you clear exit formalities and security on the same level before heading to a single concourse area with limited seating. Lines can stack up quickly if two international flights are processing at once, so add at least 30–45 minutes over whatever check-in cutoff United publishes.

On the landside side of Terminal 2 you’ll mainly find check-in counters, a few basic seating areas, and access to local taxis waiting outside the curb. Because drivers often try to drop foreigners at Terminal 3 by default, frequent flyers on FlyerTalk say they literally show the words “Terminal 2” on their printed United confirmation or phone screen to the driver before they get in the car, then repeat it again when approaching the airport entrance gates.

Once you pass security into the airside area, you’ll see Restaurante Terminal 2 and Bar Terminal 2 covering most of the food options near the gates. Prices tend to be higher than in the city, so expect to pay airport markups for sandwiches, snacks, and beer, and don’t count on every menu item being available close to the last evening departures. If you want a real meal, eat in Havana first and treat Terminal 2 food as backup.

Restaurante Terminal 2 works as the sit-down option, though service can run on Cuban time and some travelers report limited choices by late afternoon. Bar Terminal 2 focuses more on quick drinks and light bites, and is usually the better bet if boarding starts in under 30 minutes. Bring small bills in cash, since card terminals and payment networks have a habit of freezing right when a full United departure bank is trying to pay.

For last-minute reading material or small souvenirs, Bookstore Terminal 2 is the main shop you’ll see after security, near the gate seating area. Expect a small selection of books and magazines rather than a full newsstand, and limited travel essentials compared with bigger Latin American hubs. If you need chargers, specific toiletries, or kid supplies, buy them in town before heading out to the airport.

The lounge option here is Salon VIP Terminal 2, located airside past security, typically used as the contract lounge for eligible premium passengers and some paid-access programs. Space is modest compared with Terminal 3 lounges, with basic cold snacks, soft drinks, and sometimes local rum, and Wi‑Fi that can slow down when more than one flight’s worth of passengers are inside. Don’t burn a long layover here; most regulars time their arrival for 60–90 minutes before departure so they can clear security and grab a quick drink or snack before boarding.

Local regulars on FlyerTalk say they always confirm terminal assignment twice: once when booking the United ticket and again online or by phone the day before flying out of Havana. The move is simple: if the boarding pass says Terminal 2, tell the taxi “Terminal 2, United Airlines” before leaving your hotel, and reconfirm at the airport’s main entrance checkpoint where staff often ask which terminal you want. One last thing: build a buffer of at least 2 hours curb to gate here to cover driver arguments about Terminals 2 vs 3, check-in lines, and any slowdowns at security.
