Sixt and Europcar desks sit directly opposite Arrivals in HAM

The main rental car counters sit landside between Terminals T1 and T2, on Level 0 opposite the public Arrivals hall. You walk out of baggage claim, follow the “Mietwagen / Car Rental” signs, and you’re at the desks in under 2–3 minutes on foot. No shuttle buses, no trains, just a short indoor walk from your carousel to the keys.

Cars park in the multi-storey car park P1, connected to the terminal by covered walkways, usually one level up from the rental counters. Once your contract is printed, staff point you to a specific bay number in P1, and you ride the elevator up one floor. Even with one checked bag, expect about 5–10 minutes from desk to driving out of the garage if there’s no queue.

Most big brands operate here: you’ll typically see Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Budget, and Buchbinder listed on Hamburg Airport’s rental overview. Hours track flight banks, so core desks usually run from around the first departures at roughly 06:00 through late evening arrivals near 23:00, but exact opening times vary by company and the day of the week.

Pricing swings a lot with demand, but for a small manual car in off-peak months you often see base rates around €35–€50 per day, before insurance and extras. Automatics, one-way rentals out of Germany, winter tyres between roughly November and March, and adding a second driver can easily push the daily total past €70–€90, so read the options list at the counter before you initial anything.

Returning the car is straightforward: follow the blue “Rental Car Return / Mietwagen Rückgabe” signs back toward the airport and into car park P1. Most firms use dedicated return lanes with fuel receipts checked on the spot. If you arrive outside desk hours, several companies support key drop boxes at P1, as long as you return before the time printed on your contract.

Step-by-step from plane to rental car

  • 1. Land at HAM and follow signs to baggage claim in T1 or T2.
  • 2. Clear customs, then follow the “Mietwagen / Car Rental” signs toward the central Arrivals area.
  • 3. Reach the rental counters opposite Arrivals on Level 0 and present your passport, driver’s license, and credit card.
  • 4. Confirm mileage limits, fuel policy, and insurance options before signing the rental agreement.
  • 5. Take the elevator or stairs to the assigned level in car park P1 and find your marked bay number.
  • 6. Walk around the car, photograph any existing damage, and compare it with the condition sheet before leaving.
  • 7. Drive out following the exit signs; the A7 Autobahn toward Hamburg city centre sits roughly 8–10 km from the airport.

One practical tip: if you land late, pre-book a car with a brand that shows 23:00 or later closing time at HAM, so you are not stuck at the counter with lights off and no keys.
