Six-minute S-Bahn ride from Hannover Flughafen to Hauptbahnhof

Regional Deutsche Bahn trains from Hannover Flughafen station get you to Hannover Hauptbahnhof in about 6 minutes, running typically every 30 minutes most of the day. The station sits under the terminal complex, a short walk from Terminals A, B, and C, with clear “S-Bahn” and train icons from arrivals.

Hannover Flughafen is served by S-Bahn line S5, which runs between the airport and Hannover Hbf, continuing toward Hameln or Paderborn depending on the time of day. Trains usually start around 04:30 and run until close to 01:00, but late-night and early-morning gaps do happen, so check the DB Navigator app or station screens before heading downstairs.

A one-way ticket from Hannover Flughafen to Hannover Hauptbahnhof in the GVH/DB zone typically costs around €4–€5 in second class, valid on the S5 and city trams/buses for a limited time. You can buy tickets from the red DB machines on the station level, from the DB Navigator app, or at the staffed DB counter in the terminal during daytime hours, paying by card or cash.

Regional tickets cover second class on the S5, which is standard for this short hop of roughly 11 km. Trains usually have low-floor doors or short internal steps and space near the doors for 2–4 suitcases per vestibule, but at peak times after work hours between roughly 16:00 and 18:30 you may stand for the short ride.

To reach the station, follow the “DB / S-Bahn” signs from arrivals in Terminals A–C and take the escalator or elevator down one level to the platforms. Platforms are numbered, with digital boards at each side showing “S5 Hannover Hbf” plus departure times and intermediate stops; trains toward the city center always show “Hannover Hbf” as a key stop.

Regional Deutsche Bahn services beyond Hannover Hbf connect the airport indirectly to cities like Hildesheim, Celle, and Minden with one change at the main station. For longer trips, you can step off the S5 at Hannover Hbf and catch IC or ICE trains toward Hamburg, Berlin, or Frankfurt on the next platform.

One practical tip: buy your ticket while waiting for bags in Terminal B or C using the DB Navigator app, so you can walk straight to the S5 platform and board as soon as you clear customs and exit arrivals.
