Rideshare

Rideshare 20-30 min

Uber shows almost no cars at Graz Airport most days

Expect a 20–30 minute ride from Graz Airport (T1) into the city, but don’t expect to get it through Uber or Bolt. Reddit threads from 2023 on r/Austria are blunt: Graz does not have regular Uber service the way Vienna does, and visitors who open the Uber app at GRZ often see zero nearby drivers.

Coverage is patchy across Styria, and several users report they could not find any Uber drivers in Graz at all, even when trying from the Hauptbahnhof area about 10 km from the airport. One commenter ended up just taking a regular taxi after watching multiple apps search for drivers for more than 10 minutes with no results.

Where Uber does appear to work in parts of Austria outside Vienna, locals say it often runs through existing taxi companies, so the “Uber” you see is essentially a licensed taxi with pricing close to the meter. At Graz Airport there is no dedicated rideshare pickup lane or signposted zone: everything funnels through the standard taxi rank directly outside arrivals at T1.

Wait times in the apps are the main headache mentioned in recent Reddit posts. People report opening Uber in Graz, seeing either no vehicles at all or ETAs stretching beyond 20 minutes, and then walking 50–100 meters to the regular taxi stand instead. At that point, the typical 20–30 minute taxi ride into central Graz is faster than continuing to refresh ride‑hailing apps.

Regulars on r/Austria consistently tell visitors to forget Uber in Graz and plan around taxis or public transport instead. The taxi rank at T1 usually has several cars already queued when flights from Vienna or Frankfurt land, while the S5 train from "Flughafen Graz/Feldkirchen" station runs into Graz Hauptbahnhof in around 12 minutes once you walk the roughly 300 meters from the terminal.

Step-by-step if you still want to try rideshare:

  • 1. As soon as you land at GRZ T1, open Uber or Bolt while still on the runway and note car availability around the airport.
  • 2. After you collect bags, check the ETA again at the arrivals hall doors; if it shows “no cars” or more than 15–20 minutes, abort and switch to a taxi.
  • 3. If a driver actually accepts, message them in the app and agree to meet at the main terminal forecourt, by the signed "Taxi" area about 50 meters in front of arrivals.
  • 4. Keep an eye on the map for last‑minute cancellations; if the driver doesn’t move toward the terminal within 5 minutes, walk to the taxi line and go with the next cab.
  • 5. On the ride, watch the route to central Graz (about 10–12 km) and plan your return: most locals recommend booking a regular taxi back to GRZ rather than betting on rideshare twice.

One practical tip: screenshot your app’s “no cars available” screen at GRZ; it makes the taxi choice feel easier when you see in black and white that rideshare isn’t really running here.

Step by step

  1. 01 Download and open the rideshare app.
  2. 02 Enter your pickup location and destination (Graz Airport).
  3. 03 Request a ride and wait for your driver to arrive.
  4. 04 Enjoy your ride to the airport.
Watch out for
  • Not checking the app for surge pricing during peak hours.
  • Assuming all rideshare drivers know the best routes.
