Starbucks

Most 5 a.m. GRR departures start with this Starbucks line

This Starbucks sits past security in Terminal 1 at Gerald R. Ford International, right in the main concourse near the early-morning gates. It opens before the first wave of departures around 5:00 a.m., so it becomes the de facto stop for Grand Rapids locals grabbing caffeine on their way to ORD, DTW, or ATL. By 6:00 a.m., the queue can stretch 15–20 people deep, but service stays fairly quick by airport standards.

You get the standard Starbucks playbook here: espresso drinks, brewed coffee, teas, Frappuccinos, refreshers, and the usual bakery case. Expect a tall drip coffee to run around $3 and espresso drinks to hit the $5–$7 range, similar to street pricing. Food options include breakfast sandwiches, protein boxes, and pastries that work as a grab-and-go backup if you skipped food in Grand Rapids proper.

Because GRR is small and has just one main terminal, this Starbucks often doubles as the meeting point for families flying out together on Delta, American, and United. Seating nearby is limited to a few shared tables and bar-height spots within about 30 feet of the counter, so plan to take your drink back toward your exact gate if you want elbow room.

Mobile order through the Starbucks app sometimes functions here, but during heavy morning banks around 6:00–8:00 a.m., staff occasionally disable it to keep up with in-person orders. If you really need something custom like a decaf almond milk latte or a specific breakfast sandwich, aim to order at least 30 minutes before a 7:00 a.m. boarding time.

Tip: If your flight leaves from a gate at the far end of Terminal 1 (around gates A5–A8), hit Starbucks first, then walk to your gate with your drink; it’s less than a five-minute stroll even at a relaxed pace.
