Firehouse Subs

One of Terminal 1’s only big chains, Firehouse Subs sits airside in GRR and fills the “I just need a familiar sandwich” slot. You’re looking at hot subs in the $9–$13 range, plus chips and fountain drinks that push a combo toward $15–$18. Portions track with the standard Firehouse playbook: a medium is enough for most people, a large is a commitment before a regional jet hop out of Grand Rapids.

Firehouse runs on typical airport hours, roughly early-morning through the last evening departures out of Terminal 1, but the full hot sub lineup really makes sense from late breakfast onward. Expect the usual suspects: Hook & Ladder, Firehouse Meatball, New York Steamer, plus a veggie sub and salads if you don’t want a 10-inch roll before a 2-hour flight. Kids’ combos hit a lower price point, handy if you’ve got two hungry people and one gate change.

Order at the counter, grab your numbered receipt, and they call you when your sub hits the line; at quiet times in GRR that can be under 5 minutes, but during the 4–7 p.m. departure bank it can stretch closer to 10–15. Toasted bread and melted cheese standard, so if you’re taking a sandwich onto a 45-minute hop to Detroit or Chicago, ask them to go lighter on the steam so it doesn’t turn soggy in the bag.

Firehouse sits landside of most seating clusters but still inside security for Terminal 1, so you can keep an eye on nearby gate screens while you eat. Most subs reheat fine, but the meatball can get messy fast in a 17-inch personal item. One last tip: split a large between two people and add a side of chips each; it lands around $10 per person and leaves room for a coffee near your gate later.
