Rental counters sit inside T1, cars parked just outside baggage claim
On-site Rental Cars at Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) keep everything in T1, so you land, walk past one baggage carousel, and you’re basically there. Counters sit in the small arrivals hall, and the rental lot is directly across the access road, roughly a 2–3 minute walk from the doors. For anyone heading to Colorado National Monument, Palisade (about 12 miles east), or Grand Mesa, having your own car here makes more sense than trying to line up sporadic rideshares.
Most major brands run on-airport at GJT, typically from the first morning departures around 5:00–5:30 a.m. through the last evening arrivals, often 11:00 p.m. or so. Exact hours vary by company and season, so check your specific desk before booking a 6:00 a.m. flight or a 10:45 p.m. arrival. Because T1 is compact, you can walk from check-in to the rental counters in under 2 minutes, then out to the cars in another 2–3 minutes.
Rates swing a lot with summer tourism and ski traffic; seeing daily prices double between January and July isn’t unusual. Fuel in Grand Junction usually tracks a bit lower than Denver, and there’s a gas station on Horizon Drive less than 1 mile from the terminal for returns. If you plan to rack up miles to Moab (about 110 miles away) or over the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, unlimited-mileage contracts matter more than saving a few dollars on base rate.
Western Slope weather adds another layer. I-70 through Glenwood Canyon can close for hours, and winter storms on the Grand Mesa pass at over 10,000 feet make all-wheel drive and decent tires worth the upcharge. In July and August, you’ll want working A/C for 95°F afternoons on US‑6 and I‑70. Ask at the desk about mountain driving policies and any restrictions on unpaved roads before you head toward trailheads.
Practical tip: Lock in a cancellable on-airport rental 2–3 weeks before peak weekends (wine festivals in Palisade, holiday ski periods), then re-check prices 3–4 days before arrival; GJT inventory is small, and same-day walk-up rates can jump fast when only a handful of cars remain.
