regional train

Track 1 at Regionalbahnhof often shows RB58 right next to S8/S9

RB58 runs as a regional train from Frankfurt Airport’s Regionalbahnhof under Terminal 1, not from the long-distance Fernbahnhof by the Sheraton/Marriott. It usually departs from track 1, along with S8 and S9 toward Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, and gives you a slightly quieter ride with fewer intermediate stops than the S‑Bahn. Figure about 12–15 minutes from the airport to Frankfurt Hbf when you catch it in the right direction.

After landing at Terminal 1 or 2, follow signs to “Regionalbahnhof” and ignore the Fernbahnhof signs unless your ticket actually says ICE/IC. From Terminal 2, the SkyLine train gets you to Terminal 1 in about 5–7 minutes, then it’s another 5 minutes down the escalators to the Regionalbahnhof concourse. Ticket machines for RMV regional tickets sit right by the platforms and sell airport–Frankfurt Hbf rides for roughly €5–€6 in 2024.

How to ride RB58 from FRA, step by step

  • 1. Walk to the Regionalbahnhof under Terminal 1. From baggage claim in T1, follow the green “Regionalbahnhof” pictograms; from T2, ride SkyLine to T1 and then follow signs downstairs for about 300–400 meters of walking total.
  • 2. Buy an RMV ticket to Frankfurt(Main) Hbf. Use the blue/white RMV or DB machines, choose “Frankfurt(Main) Hbf,” and pay with coins, notes, or standard credit/debit; the price is around €5–€6 one way.
  • 3. Check the departure board for track 1. Look for RB58 or any train marked to “Frankfurt(Main) Hbf” leaving from “Gleis 1.” Regulars just board the first RB or S‑Bahn to Hbf instead of fixating on S8/S9 only.
  • 4. Board RB58 and stow luggage in the door areas. Trains usually have more open seating than peak-hour S‑Bahns; grab a 2nd‑class seat and keep larger bags in the vestibule racks or between seat backs near the doors.
  • 5. Ride 12–15 minutes to Frankfurt Hbf. RB58 typically makes only a handful of stops, then rolls into the main hall of Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, where you can switch to U‑Bahn, tram, or another regional train within 5 minutes of walking.

What regulars do: they head straight to track 1, scan the board, and board the first S8, S9, or RB58 toward Hbf instead of waiting for a specific line. One last tip: if your ticket shows “RB” and a low track number at “Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Regionalbahnhof,” don’t waste time walking to the Fernbahnhof upstairs — you’re in the wrong station if you see ICE 700‑series trains only.
